School Safety Question #4:  ID Badges/Keys/Fobs

Why is it important that all staff wear ID badges and carry their keys/fobs?

Identification Badges:
It is critical that staff and students be able to spot anyone in the hallway who has not checked in at the office or is not a staff member.

Although you may believe all staff members know you, many people in our school community may not easily recognize you (e.g., substitute teachers, new teachers, student teachers, parent volunteers, students, custodians, etc.).

Additionally, if a crisis occurs, law enforcement personnel will need to rapidly identify who belongs in our school.

IDs can be in the form of the green engraved badges, or (even better) your Life Touch badge that has your picture on it.  Check with your office secretary if you did not receive one.

Magnets are available if you'd like to affix your Life Touch badge to it (to avoid poking through clothing).  Break-away lanyards are also available to wear around your neck.

Keys and Fobs:
Use your DOOR BLOK consistently, so you won't need your keys during the school day to lock/unlock your classroom door.  It should remain in the locked position, with the DOOR BLOK on.  But, carry your keys/fob so you are prepared should an emergency arise and you need to evacuate or take shelter in another part of the building.

If staff members have their keys on them, it may likely save their lives and the lives of others by being able to access more spaces or doors and be able to re-enter the school if a threat becomes greater outside.

Keys can be secured in many ways (e.g., on ID lanyards, plastic coil wrist bands, in pockets, on belt loops via a carabiner, etc.).

If you forget your keys at home, check out a set from the school office for the day.  We usually have extras for substitutes.

Thank you for your efforts in keeping our school community as safe as possible.

Sincerely,
