WTU President calls for stop to misleading DCPS employment letters
Numerous DCPS teachers who have already secured employment for the 2013-2014 school year have been receiving misleading letters that suggest teachers who receive them are to be subjected to the same drug testing and background checks as a newly hired teacher.
WTU contacted Strategic Staffing Manager Pankaj Rayamajhi, who oversaw the distribution of letters, regarding the issue. Mr. Rayamajhi's explanation was that the language used in the letters was generic, and that he had informed teachers who received the letters that they would not be subjected to new hire criteria. However, teachers have continued to be confused and misled by these letters.
WTU President Nathan Saunders has written to DCPS Chief of Human Capital Jason Kamras requesting a resolution to this issue. We will keep members posted on the outcome.

Gray administration wants to establish unified lottery for D.C. public and charter schools
By Emma Brown
The Gray administration is seeking to establish a unified enrollment lottery for the city's traditional and charter schools in time to determine admissions for the 2014-15 school year, officials said Thursday.
While many details are yet to be worked out, the goal is to streamline an enrollment process that can be chaotic and frustrating for families and school administrators, said Deputy Mayor for Education Abigail Smith, whose office is coordinating the effort.

Legislation would give DCPS chancellor power to authorize charters
By Matt DelSignore
"One of my top priorities as mayor has been ensuring that every child in the District has access to a top-quality public education," D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said in his weekly Sunday morning radio address on All-News 99.1.
To further his efforts, he said he will introduce legislation that would provide the school system with flexibility and tools to inch closer to that goal.
Gray's plan would give the Chancellor of D.C. Public Schools the power to authorize charter schools within city limits.

DCPS to replace 16 principals this fall
By Emma Brown
The District plans to allow public charter schools to enter into long-term leases for a dozen old public school buildings, some of which are traditional public schools that are slated to close by next year, Mayor Vincent C. Gray said Monday.
D.C. Public Schools officials said this week that 16 schools will open this fall with new principals, roughly matching last year's leadership turnover.
Officials would not discuss reasons for individual principals' departures, saying only that some are resigning or retiring, and others have received letters of "non-appointment" - another way of saying they've been fired.
