PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Good evening, this is Nathan Saunders, president of the Washington Teachers' Union.

Our national union, AFT, ruled that WTU's Elections Committee was properly elected under the AFT and WTU Constitution and Bylaws. The Elections Committee is authorized to proceed with the WTU officer election. The complete ruling is on WTU's website.

AFT upholds WTU election as proper and valid

On Friday, May 17, American Federation of Teachers (AFT) upheld the Elections Committee of the Washington Teachers' Union (WTU) as properly elected under the WTU Constitution and Bylaws. Therefore, the Elections Committee is authorized to proceed with the 2013 election of WTU officers as required by the WTU Constitution. (Click here to read AFT's Official Response Letter.)

AFT began an investigation into whether WTU could proceed with the present elections schedule when several WTU officer candidates alleged that the Elections Committee was not properly elected under the union rules and regulations as set forth in the WTU Constitution and Bylaws.

Gray releases 16 D.C. public school buildings for reuse by charters

 By Emma Brown

The District plans to allow public charter schools to enter into long-term leases for a dozen old public school buildings, some of which are traditional public schools that are slated to close by next year, Mayor Vincent C. Gray said Monday.

Officials are making available four other buildings for short-term rental by charters and community organizations, with the school system retaining ownership of the buildings, giving the city school system the ability to expand in case of future enrollment growth.

First Lady and Kerry Washington push for the arts

By Diana Ozemebhoya Eromosele

Students from the Savoy Elementary School in Washington, D.C., crooned, somersaulted, Lindy Hopped and re-enacted scenes from the 1970s film Grease on Friday as a way to flex their school's new muscles in arts education. They performed in the gym to an audience of their peers and two distinguished ladies cheering in the front row: first lady Michelle Obama and actress Kerry Washington.

The showcase demonstrated the school's involvement in Turnaround: Arts, a new initiative to beef up -- and in some cases introduce -- arts programs to eight low-performing public schools across the nation.
