Good evening, this is Nathan Saunders, president of the Washington Teachers' Union.

 

I've been working on excessing issues since December. This year we expect to see a significant reduction in the number of WTU members affected by excessing, despite the closing and consolidation of schools.

What is the most important lesson you have learned as a teacher?

I've learned that different kids need different things and a "one size fits all" approach never works.

Tell us about your involvement with the Capital Rowing Club.
In 2010, with the help and support of Capital Rowing Club, I started a rowing program for local students (age 13-19) who have never previously rowed. Traditionally, rowing is a very elite and expensive sport, but our goal was to make it accessible to anyone who was interested (we are supported entirely by donations).
 
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN DCPS
DCPS prepares to 'excess' fewer than 350 teachers

D.C. Public Schools officials say they anticipate sending fewer than 350 "excess" notices to teachers whose jobs have been eliminated because of budget cuts or changes to academic programs.

That number is in line with recent years despite the fact that 13 schools are slated to close in June, displacing hundreds of teachers. DCPS Chief of Human Capital Jason Kamras said the school system has worked closely with the Washington Teachers Union to match educators in closing schools with vacancies elsewhere.
