10TH HWD (Height x Width x Depth) Juried Sculpture Exhibition is a juried exhibition for sculpture artists in Ohio and surrounding states. HWD is the area's only gallery exhibition devoted exclusively to sculpture. The exhibition runs from August 29 through October 7, 2016. The opening reception on Thursday from 6 - 8pm with an awards presentation at 7pm. Both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. Rosewood Gallery, Kettering.

An Evening with Mark Twain. The Xenia Area Community Theater (X*ACT) is presenting a one time production at the lovely Caesar Creek Vineyards. The one-man show, featuring actor Al Yarcho as Twain, will feature excerpts from Twain's books, stories and speeches. Thursday, 7:30pm.


The Little Shop of Horrors film has devoured the hearts of theatre goers for over 30 years. The meek floral assistant Seymour stumbles across a new breed of plant he names "Audrey II" - after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune as long as he keeps feeding it, BLOOD. Seymour discovers Audrey II's out of this world origins and intent towards global domination. The Victoria Theatre, Friday, at 8:00pm; Saturday, 2:00pm and 8:00pm.


DVAC25 presents 25 works of art by 25 artists from DVAC's first 25 years of programming. The 25 artists, some of who were well-established from DVAC's beginning and others who have since gained significant artistic reputations, came together to create new works in pairs or groups resulting in this groundbreaking exhibition. Opening Reception: Friday, 6-8 pm (free and open to the public).


A Self-Guided Tour of Yellow Springs Private Art Collections is on Saturday, September 3, and it includes 8 different Art Collections which are on the tour for the first time. The homes are located all around town, so biking or driving between homes is recommended, rather than walking. The homeowners will be on hand to greet you and answer your questions. And please be sure to make time to visit the YSAC Community Gallery!

35th Annual Artistry in Wood Show will be in the Roberts Centre near Wilmington, Ohio and will run Saturday and Sunday. This is a well-established show and an excellent venue to see, show and buy wood art, meet other artisans, get inspired and just have fun.

91%: A Film About Guns in America. This is a documentary that examines U.S. gun policies with a focus on the background check system. While 91% of Americans are for background checks on all gun sales, Congress fails to close the loophole. Why is that and how does that undermine our public safety? "NEWS" IN DAYTON
The Last Lifeboat. Joseph Bruce Ismay, an English businessman who served as chairman and managing director of the White Star Line of steamships becomes the perfect scapegoat for the sinking of the Titanic. This play deals not only with the disaster itself, but the sensationalized trials and aftermath of an event that changed the world forever. Now - September 4.

Girls on the Run of Dayton is now accepting registrations for Fall 2016 season, which starts the week of September 12 and ends with their celebratory 5k on November 20.



Dayton Metro Library's Special Collections Division has scanned and uploaded more than 150 high school yearbooks for viewing on the Library's website. Yearbooks currently available range in years from Steele High School in 1909 to Centerville High School, 2007. More than 200 additional yearbooks from Dayton-area schools will be uploaded in the coming months.

Opera Singers Needed. Calling all singers to audition for the 2016-2017 Dayton Opera Chorus. This is Tuesday, September 6, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 10, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Fairmont Presbyterian Church. Singers auditioning for this professional, paid chorus are asked to prepare two pieces. Auditions are open to all voices, and an accompanist will be provided at no charge. Volunteers Needed! Woodland is seeking volunteers to lead their History, Mystery, Mayhem and Murder tours this fall season. If you like history and enjoy walking through the cemetery call now for immediate training. Shakespeare in South Park presents its 8th season with "As You Like It," a madcap romantic comedy set by director Susan Robert in the 1920s. Gender reversal of some principal roles will leave you thinking Shakespeare assigned the wrong genders in the first place. Bring your chair or blanket. It's FREE! September 9, 10, & 11.

Each September area photographers bring their cameras to the large sunflower field on Route 68 north of Yellow Springs. 
I talked with Jim Clem, the farmer who plants the field. Jim tells me the flowers should be ready in about a week. I plan to be there
next weekend.
