Dayton Beer Week 2016 officially kicked off yesterday and there are many things going on this week!




At the Hindu Temple of Dayton experience the essence and beauty of the sacred festival, Rakshabandhan. This ancient celebration reminds us how powerful, pure and precious the bond is between each soul and their Eternal Father, the Supreme Soul- the Comforter of Hearts. Tuesday, 6:45-8:30pm.

MOUND SCIENCE AND ENERGY MUSEUM's Lecture Series will summarize the development of the Atomic Bombs during World War II and the role of the Dayton Project in this effort. Wednesday, 7:00 PM. The Museum is located at 1075 Mound Rd., Miamisburg, Ohio, and is free and open to the general public.


Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park has lots of activities on Thursday. A Ranger-led bicycle ride at 10:00am; two Ranger-led walking tours at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center visitor center, or at the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center at 10:30am or 2:30pm; stop by the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center at noon for a slice of birthday cake; arrive at the Paul Laurence Dunbar House 1:00 P.M. to take part in the Rainworks® sidewalk art unveiling and ranger-led house tours. All events and activities are free and open to the public.

Join up for a community conversation on what Islam is, the rise of Islamophobia, and the persistence of racism in our society. Thursday, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm; Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 401 S Paul Laurence Dunbar St

The DAI is having a tour of the current special exhibitions, followed by a champagne toast. This is on Thursday from 6-7 pm The cost for this special tour is $5 for members and $20 for non-members (includes exhibition admission and reception). Space is limited, and advance reservations are recommended.

Craft Activism for Peace. Two library artists-in-residence are doing a talk on how yarn-bombing can help change the way people view their neighborhood. The artists, known as Jafagirls, hope to inspire Dayton crafters to yarn "bomb" Salem Ave, a.k.a. The Salem Avenue Peace Corridor. This is at the Northwest Branch of Dayton Metro Library on Thursday, 7:00-8:00 p.m. Free and open to the public.


SICSA Pet Adoption Center is hosting a Family Film Night on Friday at 8:00 PM. "Homeward Bound" will be shown outdoors at SICSA. Local vendors will be on site from 8:00 PM - 9:15 PM with pet-related items for sale, as well as snacks and treats. The movie will begin at 9:15 PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs for seating in the lawn. 


The 23rd Annual Greater Dayton Lebanese Festival will feature Middle Eastern dancing and entertainment, cultural displays, crafts booths and amusement rides for all ages. Jim "Pee Wee' Martin, one of the last surviving members of the famous "Band of Brothers" from World War II, will visit Centerville Library, on Saturday from 1:30-3pm. He was a part of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (101st Airborne Division) who jumped into Normandy on D-Day into the Netherlands for "Market Garden" and defended Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Two years ago Martin repeated his parachute jump. He told reporters at the time that the recent jump was a whole lot easier. "It didn't (compare), because there wasn't anybody shooting at me today."



Alefest is Saturday, 3 - 6pm. at Dave Hall Plaza. Over 400 craft beers, cask alley, wine garden, live music, food trucks, vendors and more!!!




On Saturday at 7:30pm the Hayner will host a concert on the lawn featuring two gifted young musicians that call their duo, CAAMP. This free outdoor concert features Taylor Meier on guitar and Evan Westfall on banjo and kick drums. Columbus natives, these long time friends have easy engaging and a folksy, Mumford-and-Sons love of story and string. Join this for good music, refreshments and good company.


Unwritten is an 8-episode serialized podcast written, acted and produced locally here in Dayton. The dramatic and comedic podcast series brings its listeners along a journey with a group of friends and their protagonist Elaine as she wrangles mature social issues, works to uncover a mystery, and tackles her inner demons. The group will be premiering the first episode with a live talk back afterwards. Sunday, 5:30pm at The Neon.       
 
 
"NEWS" IN DAYTON

We all know the Chicago Bean, the New York LOVE sign, and the giant lawn birdies in Kansas City. Now UpDayton and the K12 Gallery want proposals for a new Dayton icon. They want creative designs for a public sculpture that will attract locals and visitors alike. Submission deadline: September 14, 2016 at 6pm. New Dayton Icon Is Needed.

The Last Lifeboat. Joseph Bruce Ismay, an English businessman who served as chairman and managing director of the White Star Line of steamships becomes the perfect scapegoat for the sinking of the Titanic. This play deals not only with the disaster itself, but the sensationalized trials and aftermath of an event that changed the world forever. Now - September 4.  


Boonshoft School of Medicine offers three new certificate programs in global health, public health




Girls on the Run of Dayton is now accepting registrations for Fall 2016 season, which starts the week of September 12 and ends with their celebratory 5k on November 20.



Dayton Metro Library's Special Collections Division has scanned and uploaded more than 150 high school yearbooks for viewing on the Library's website. Yearbooks currently available range in years from Steele High School in 1909 to Centerville High School, 2007. More than 200 additional yearbooks from Dayton-area schools will be uploaded in the coming months.

Getting closer to the end of NEON Lumbar Supporter Campaign. They are planning to install all new seats later in September.  The current chairs are 30 years old, and they need to be replaced (major creaking, metal failure and some bad springs are to blame). While the goal is to raise half of the money needed for this project (100 seats) as of right now, they've sold 82 chairs.  Many, many thanks to all of you who have already helped with this campaign!

"I've worked at the MetroParks for 10 years. First I watered flowers at RiverScape, then I worked at Island MetroPark, and now I work at Wegerzyn Gardens. 
As I'm working, I look for things to show the kids at the Children's Discovery Garden. These caterpillars will become beautiful Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies."

It is vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) - also known as vascular dementia, a disconcerting and frightening term that no one wants to hear in regards to themselves or someone they love.
