The draft of Five Rivers MetroParks' 10-year comprehensive master plan availableon Monday, 6 to 8 p.m. at Cox Arboretum MetroPark, and Tuesday, 6 to 8 p.m. at Five Rivers MetroParks Main Office. Join Five Rivers MetroParks and master plan consultants to learn the results of a 10-month process of collecting community input to better understand what Montgomery County residents want from their park district.

On Tuesday night on TV you will find out if Wright State University student Emily Bingham will advance to the final round of Jeopardy! College Tournament. Bingham started the competition as one of 15 contestants from universities across the country.




Leagues of Their Own: Women and African Americans in Baseball History. This panel discussion includes such topics as the history of baseball teams in Dayton, Ohio, the influence of Negro League baseball teams, early women's leagues, and the relevance of baseball in contemporary society. The Dayton Juniors Volleyball Tournament Presidents' Cup will be held for two days all around Dayton. This is recognized as one of the most prestigious youth Junior Olympics Volleyball tournaments in the country which attracts over 400 teams from around the United States and Canada annually. Winter Bird ID Basics and How to Count Birds. This is on Saturday, 2:30 pm at The Aullwood Center. Tom Hissong will offer a hands-on workshop for all ages on how to identify the common winter birds and how to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count at your home. Dress warmly and come help count the birds.

Come and show your romantic side at the next Dunbar Literary Circle. This is a day filled with roses, flowers, cards of affection, hugs, and, of course, lots of chocolates. It's also a day for you to come to the Dunbar House visitor center and enjoy poetry, short stories and thoughts about the age of romance. You are also invited to read your own poetry or a poem by a favorite poet or writer. Sunday, February 14 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. House tours at 1 pm; light refreshments follow. 

The Miracle Clubhouse of Goodwill/Easter Seals Miami Valley is holding a Valentine's Day Spaghetti Dinner and Cooking Demo fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 14. The dinner and cooking demo will begin at 4:30 p.m. 
The cost is $35 per person and includes a 5 course Italian dinner prepared by the Sons of Italy John Pirelli Lodge and Clubhouse members. A vegan/gluten free menu is available. 

"NEWS" IN DAYTON

The Dayton League of Women Voters is hosting a virtual book club to discuss Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. This is a memoir of Stevenson's time at the Equal Justice Initiative, an organization dedicated to defending people who have been abandoned by the criminal justice system. The League will be posting discussion questions on their website throughout the month and hosting discussions through various social media forums.












The Downtown Dayton Partnership and its community partners have released the latest update for the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan and inside it you can read the 2015 Year In Review.


Two new restaurants now open!

Tasty Measures Cafe, located at 200 S. Jefferson St. near the Dayton Convention Center, is opening Monday, featuring specials and prizes through Wednesday. The deli/bakery is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

The pop-up shop project is a way of filling up vacant storefronts downtown and giving new businesses a helping hand. Jacob Baker has one of the new Pop Up Shops - Baker Salvage at 31 Saint Clair Street.
"We make things out of reclaimed wood as well as salvaged materials," said Jacob. "Where others see trash I see treasure."
Jacob showed me a table he had made using wood from a railroad bridge that was over 100 years old when it was torn down. He does his work in the back of the shop. When I visited he was finishing a table that will be used at the nearby Smales pretzel shop.
