Prep This Month
ReadySetGo
We have seen abnormal moisture levels in fuels due to drought.  This combined with high winds leads experts to believe this will be the worst fire season and we've already seen very early and dangerous fires in the state.  This month, ensure your grab-and-go bag is ready.  Change out expired items like batteries or medications.
Remember, when activated as a volunteer we will do our best to meet your needs, however, you are expected to have AT LEAST a 24-hour supply of food and water with you.

Fire Watch Activations
Worst Fire Season
Reports are that this is the worst potential fire season on record.  California has already seen a large number of fires very early in the fire season.  The fuels are exceptionally dry and combined with high winds can burn very rapidly and intently as we currently see with the fire burning in the Santiago area known as the Baker Fire.

We will likely rely on CERT and RACES in the coming weeks for many more fire watch patrol activations and will be coordinating with the county and Irvine Ranch for specific posts so that our teams do not duplicate effort.

Additionally, we have ordered magnetic placards for vehicles as well as cones, clipboards, vests, wind/weather meters and much more.  On Wednesday, October 9 we will be offering an additional training session for fire watch patrol.  I highly encourage you to attend the training if you were unable to attend the August training.  As we move forward I hope that we can make some of this training video based to make it easier for you to access training.

Lastly, I hope that you encourage your friends and neighbors to take CERT training or join RACES.  The next CERT class begins on October 14 and we can provide copies of training class fliers if you are able to meet with your neighbors and encourage their enrollment in classes.

Thank you very much for your service and I hope to see you at the next activation.  It is not about if, but when!
Sincerely,

Mary Jo Flynn
