Greetings!
Well, November is upon us...which is the traditional month to give thanks! And I have a LOT to be thankful for, since I survived the wrath of Hurricane "Sandy"!
Although we lost power, heating, internet, tv & phones for 7 days, some really kind friends loaned us their generator (because there weren't any available at the time to purchase), which provided us a few hours every evening, with some degree of normalcy. The shortage of gas was the real issue for us, so the generator had to be used sparingly! Other friends, whose power had been restored, very kindly loaned us their house for the final few days...since they had heat, tv & internet!!
The interesting thing was, that I met many of my neighbors as we stood around chatting & commiserating over when the powerlines were going to be repaired, etc! I also met some very nice people in the "gas lines" as we stood around endlessly waiting our turn to fill up our generator cans!
When I eventually got to see the sheer destruction & havoc caused by Sandy, I realised how really thankful I was that we had escaped with very little property damage, whereas many others are still without power to this day & have lost their homes, boats, cars, etc....and even family members!
Fortunately my wife & youngest son were on tour in Germany & so missed all the fun & games...but she did bring back 3 generator gas tanks in her carry-on luggage!
The next storm hit us the following week, bringing snow & much colder temperatures. Fortunately this time we were much better prepared, except that one of our international exchange students had an emergency appendectomy as this was all going on!
Despite all of the drama during that 10 day period, I'm still extremely thankful...and after recently watching "Skyfall", my friend James Bond reinstalled sufficient faith in me, that anything's possible!! |
| Seeking Your Personal Advice | |
Last month I asked you for your creative ideas & input to enhance my networking & transition strategy, and I'm happy to say that I received quite a few ingenious ideas, some of which I've implemented & others I am considering.
Some of the essential components of my campaign include:
- Effective networking
- Innovative & frequent communications
- Maintaining a positive attitude
- Efficient time management
- Quality family time
Although I do produce this monthly newsletter, I'm really not much of a blogger, which was one of the interesting suggestions I received. Another one was to set-up a personal website, where I could showcase my blog, my resume, etc. The problem that I see with these ideas is that they actually require quite a bit of work on a regular basis, not only to maintain them, but to keep the content interesting. I'd rather use that time for more targeted networking & one-on-one meetings.
More & more recruiters seem to be using LinkedIn as the primary vehicle for sourcing & selecting talent and, in fact, some are no longer wanting to receive & maintain candidate resumes on their own in-house sites, because LinkedIn provides one common repository which people tend to keep updated.
Perhaps you may have a recommendation or suggestions for me, which could possibly add significant value to my current strategy? One simply never knows when & where the next opportunity in life will arise...so every idea will be greatly appreciated & considered...thank you! |
