True Innovation

Bell Labs is a revered name as an important part of New Jersey's technology pedigree.  Jon Gertner new book "The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation" tells its story.

From a February 25, 2012, NYTimes article

By JON GERTNER

"INNOVATION is what America has always been about," President Obama remarked in his recent State of the Union address. It's hard to disagree, isn't it? We live in a world dominated by innovative American companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google and Facebook. And even in the face of a recession, Silicon Valley's relentless entrepreneurs have continued to churn out start-up companies with outsize, world-changing ambitions.

But we idealize America's present culture of innovation too much. In fact, our trailblazing digital firms may not be the hothouse environments for creativity we might think. I find myself arriving at these doubts after spending five years looking at the innovative process at Bell Labs, the onetime research and development organization of the country's formerly monopolistic telephone company, AT&T.

Why study Bell Labs? It offers a number of lessons about how our country's technology companies - and our country's longstanding innovative edge - actually came about. Yet Bell Labs also presents a more encompassing and ambitious approach to innovation than what prevails today. Its staff worked on the incremental improvements necessary for a complex national communications network while simultaneously thinking far ahead, toward the most revolutionary inventions imaginable.

Indeed, in the search for innovative models to address seemingly intractable problems like climate change, we would do well to consider Bell Labs' example - an effort that rivals the Apollo program and the Manhattan Project in size, scope and expense. Its mission, and its great triumph, was to connect all of us, and all of our new machines, together." [READ MORE]

From a joint meeting of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, the state's Business Action Center and the Consulate General of Canada on March 28...

"Canada's largest energy companies are seeking suppliers from New Jersey to help them tap into the oil reserves of Alberta - a region estimated to hold almost two trillion barrels of oil in the form of a petroleum that occurs naturally in the sands of western Canada.

These energy companies are looking for energy partners to help them build plants, drill for oil and operate facilities in these oil sands of Alberta - the kind of partnerships that can lead to lucrative contracts for New Jersey engineers, architects, environmental experts, office managers, software providers, manufacturers and others."

Do You Know...

About the EDA incubator in Einstein's Alley?

From Sarah Portlock / The Star-Ledger March 25, 2012

"...Twenty-five biotechnology firms have set up shop in the Commercialization Center for Innovative Technologies, a 10-year-old "incubator" for companies in the early stages of their research or foreigners beginning to conduct research in America. The facility offers access to labs, affordable rent, common areas like conference rooms and - most important of all - a network among each other, the state's pharmaceutical industry and 15 research universities in New Jersey and nationwide.

The incubator program is part of the EDA's larger Technology Centre of New Jersey, which at more than 50 acres of land, offers more established companies customizable laboratory and production facilities. Biotech firms that have "graduated" from CCIT can also lease space here. The goal is to help companies get started and then as they grow, give them a reason to stay in New Jersey... There are resources on hand to help companies with their business plans and connect them with executives at bigger pharmaceutical companies and researchers at Rutgers University, Princeton and other universities. So far, seven companies have moved on from the CCIT labs."

If you'd like your company to be a tenant you must submit an application and a business plan and be approved by the CCIT's advisory board.
