LETTER FROM OUR CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER

Greeting Haynes Families,

A principal's purpose is to ensure all students learn to their maximum potential.  Myron Long, Elizabeth Simpson and Brittany Wagner-Friel all embrace that purpose and are committed to delivering the best education possible to your children.

All three of our principals were selected for Relay National Principals Academy Fellowship, a one-year program that started with a two-week intensive in July in New York City.  They will participate in four weekend intersessions throughout the academic year.

The program was designed around the foundational elements that drive student achievement: data-driven instruction; positive student culture of high expectations; observation and feedback; adult professional development; instructional planning; an aligned staff culture; and strategic leadership.

As their supervisor, I joined them at Relay for three days to learn how to best support their work.  I wish I could have stayed longer.  It was a powerful learning experience.  This week and next, the principals will train the assistant principals in observation and feedback and data meetings.

What does this mean for your student?  On a weekly basis, school leaders and teachers will be looking closely at student work to determine what they understand, where they need additional support and how to get all students to master grade-level standards.

Since we will be analyzing data weekly, we will be able to extend the learning of students who are at mastery and support the learning of those who are not quite there yet.

For grades K-8, we have hired two Instructional Specialist, one for Mathematics, Mignon Smith, and one in Literacy, Jada-Marie Tucker, to support that work.  At the high school, department chairs will support data meetings: Marisol Castillo, Shane Donovan, Barrie Moorman, Griffin Pepper, Will Stafford.

It was a busy summer, and teachers received extensive professional development throughout the summer and during Summer Institute.  We have purchased research-based curricular materials in Mathematics, Science, English Language Arts, World Language and Social Studies.  In the coming weeks, I will share more about our plans.  It is going to be a fantastic year for our students!  Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, and ask your child's principal about Relay.  I am certain that he or she would love to share the experience with you.  We are excited.

Yours in the mission,
Phyllis Hedlund
Chief Academic Officer

ATTENDANCE CORNER

Did you know that September is National Attendance Awareness Month? It is important to send your child to school on time every day of the year, but especially during this month as we will be celebrating all things attendance all month long. Look out for more information on incentives and celebrations, and start talking with your student about how important it is to come to school every day. Starting with good attendance now will build healthy habits for later on, and will lead to more success for your child. If you
have any questions about attendance, please contact Elan Ousley, Attendance and Student Engagement Specialist at [email protected]
We can all achieve perfect attendance this month! #behere

COLLEGE CORNER

FREE SAT Prep Course for juniors and seniors!

The SAT is only two months away.  We have an opportunity for your student to receive additional SAT tutoring from an experienced tutor at no cost to you. All students who want to increase their scores should come! Students can come once a week or more often until we fill up. Seniors will receive preference if the sessions get too large.

The session meets at 8:00am on Monday through Thursday.  They will help your child pick up points on the SAT. Students that get the most improvement are students that come to these extra help sessions. The extra help sessions will meet in room 202 Tuesdays and 208 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Why is GPA important?

Grade point average (GPA) is the average of the grades your child has earned in his or her classes.  This average is used as a tool to measure your child's willingness to work hard in their classes and achieve mastery of the subjects they are studying.
When applying to college, their chances of being accepted increase when they have a strong GPA.  A 4.0 is an A, a 3.0 is a B, a 2.0 is a C and anything below that shows that they are not: (a)working hard (b)seeking a better understanding from their teachers during their office hours (c)completing their assignments.
You should encourage your child to take the necessary steps to earn a 3.0 and higher in all of their classes.  This will look good to a college admissions representative when they apply to college.
GPA appears on their transcript, a document that includes all classes they have taken, the grades they have earned, and the number of hours of service that they've provided our community.

FUEL YOUR CHILD'S DAY WITH BREAKFAST

Did you know that while you are sleeping your body burns nearly 1,000 calories just to keep you alive?  When you wake up in the morning 80% of the important nutrients your body needs are depleted.  A healthy breakfast is just the fuel you body needs to have a productive day.  Adults need to eat breakfast to do their best, but children need it even more.  Their growing bodies and developing brains need re-fueling often thorough-out the day, so a great start is crucial.  A well-nourished child will learn and feel better than a hungry child any day.

So, you ask - what are the best food choices to energize your child?  Always start with a tall glass of water to re-hydrate yourself.  Oatmeal topped with nuts, berries, and/or raisins. Avoid instant or flavored oatmeal, using fresh toppings will surely taste better. Greek yogurt with honey and/or fruit toppings.  Banana, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cantaloupe, and/or kiwi should be your go-to fruits in the AM. You can also scoop out a tangy grapefruit sliced in half.  Have a bowl of cereal with at least 5 grams of fiber and less than 5 grams of sugar.  Sprinkle wheat germ or flaxseed on your cereal or yogurt to give them a vitamin packed boost.  Eggs any style offer the most complete source of protein on earth. Almond butter spread on whole wheat bread is naturally super sweet tasting.  And for drinks, coffee, tea, orange juice, or cranberry juice will give you the antioxidants you need for a great start.  Happy fueling!

HEARTFELT, THANK YOU'S!
