LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Haynes Families,
I'm excited to be joining the Haynes community and leading the high school as we begin the 15-16 school year. This year, we ground ourselves in the following values:
PRIDE = Achievement
P - Perseverance and Purpose
R - Responsibility, Respect, Reflection and Refinement
I - Integrity and Inclusiveness
D - Daring to have courage
E - Excellence and Equity
These values anchor us in the hard work and achievements that lie ahead. Our motto this year "Excellence, Always. Own It!" coined by our very own Will Stafford permeates our work as teachers, students, and community.
We hope you will visit the school anytime and we hope to see you at our back to school night August 31st from 6 - 7:30 when you will have the chance to follow your student's schedule, meet his or her teachers, and go to the activities fair to learn about the myriad of options E.L. Haynes offers in addition to studies within the classroom.
Meet our leadership team:
Dress Code
Ensuring we stay focused on academics, our dress code this year is as follows:
Long Pants: Navy, Khaki, or Black, with belt loops
Polo Shirt: White, Black, Green, Blue, or Yellow
Shoes: closed-toe, closed-heel shoes
Belt: black or brown leather or leather-looking
Dress code will be checked daily at the door.
Students must come with paper and pencils daily. Final supply lists will be distributed this week.
Jupiter
Jupiter is our new grade book that allows you to log into your student's portal any time to see her/his grades. Jupiter can send automatic reports and you can set alerts if your student's grade falls below a particular average. Come to our Back to School night to learn more! We are moving to a traditional grade scale. Our grade breakdown is below. A 3.0 - 3.49 is honor roll, and a 3.5 - 4.0 is distinguished honor roll. Students' prior GPA conversions on their transcripts will remain the same. Jupiter progress reports will be sent home every two weeks.

Cell Phones, Electronics, and Food
All cell phones, headphones, electronics, and outside food are expected to remain in lockers from 8:50 - 4:00. Food may be taken out prior to lunch. Ensuring that we respect and revere class times means ensuring distractions are away form class. Each student will receive his or her own locker with a unique combination lock.
College-Readiness
Students need a strong GPA, strong SAT scores, a well-written essay, completed application, at least 100 hours of community service, two teacher recommendations, and a counselor recommendation to be competitive in their college application. It's never too early to start! Reach out to Aaron Stallworth at astallworth@elhaynes.org in our college office to learn more.
Students travelled to Paraguay, Africa, Japan, Guatemala, Jamaica, and more this summer through opportunities at Haynes. Reach out to Kristi Li Puma at klipuma@elhaynes.org for more information on how you or your student can get involved.
Kickboard
Kickboard gives you an overview of your student's choices throughout the day. Positive and negative decisions are logged and you will receive a report every Thursday from E.L. Haynes. Kickboard documents great work habits like organization, strong discourse, and perseverance to name a few, along with tardies, uniform violations, and other behavioral infractions.
Research shows that students who participate in after school clubs and activities will be more vested in their community and will be more likely to do well in class. The more you are involved with, the more you can add to your college resume! Encourage your student to get involved in a club or sport that is of interest to him/her.
Organization and Attendance
Daily on-time attendance is critical to our students' success. Help ensure all students are well-rested and ready to be successful each day by making sure they are on time and prepared.
All students will be receiving planners shortly. Ask your student about his/her planner and ensure he/she is writing down all assignments as well as listing time planned to accomplish longer, multi-day homework assignments. Expect homework in each class, every night.
Please come visit the school anytime. I look forward to working with you and your student this year!
Best,
Elizabeth Simpson

A LETTER FROM INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SHIVAM SHAH
Dear E.L Haynes Parents,
Welcome to the start of our 2015-2016 school year! As a founding trustee of E.L. Haynes, I am amazed by how much E.L. Haynes has grown through the years - new buildings, new leadership, new curriculum and, of course, over one thousand more students from where we started twelve years ago! And yet despite our tremendous growth, our commitment to our mission - that every E.L. Haynes student of every race, socioeconomic status, and home language will reach high levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his or her choice - remains unchanged, and our commitment to achieving our mission remains equally unwavering.
The first week of school is off to a fantastic start! I had the chance to visit classrooms across all three schools this week and am so proud of the excitement, joy and quality teaching and learning underway already. And while every new school year marks a fresh start, I am particularly excited about three things this year - implementing Vision 2020, hosting our first Homecoming Celebration, and inviting your participation in the upcoming Finalist Day in the search for our new CEO.
1. Our Board of Trustees recently approved Vision 2020, a five year strategic plan that outlines a path forward for our school in the coming years. In addition to reaffirming our mission, Vision 2020 articulates a commitment to strengthening the rigor of our academic program and instructional model, while also prioritizing creating opportunities for students to thrive beyond the classroom and beyond their time at E.L. Haynes. Thank you to the many parents who shared their perspectives and informed Vision 2020. A summary of the plan is available on our website. Across all of our schools, changes are underway that reflect the spirit of Vision 2020. In the next Haynes Herald, our Chief Academic Officer Phyllis Hedlund will share more detail about some of these changes across elementary, middle and high school.
2. This November, we will welcome back our Class of 2015 and show our school spirit at our first ever Homecoming Celebration. Naturally, we will anchor our celebration around a game on our new field! We are still at the earliest stages of planning, and will be sure to share more detail shortly. We will of course be looking to all members of the E.L. Haynes community to make this a very memorable event!
3. And finally, the search for our permanent Chief Executive Officer is making good progress. I am excited to share that our search committee, led by Trustees Jacquelyn Davis and Tammy Wincup, will host a Finalist day on Friday August 28th. Parents, staff and students will have an opportunity to meet finalist candidates and share their feedback with the search committee. If you are interested in participating in the CEO Finalist Day on Friday, August 28, please email trustee Jacquelyn Davis at jdavis@jacquelyndavis.com by Thursday, August 20 and provide the following information in your email: your name, the name(s) and grade(s) of your children who attend E.L. Haynes, and the number of years you have been an E.L. Haynes parent.
If you are interested but unable to participate on August 28th, please feel free to share questions you would like to ask finalist candidates by emailing trustee Jacquelyn Davis at jdavis@jacquelyndavis.com by Thursday, August 20.
I know the search committee cares deeply about including parent voices in this process, so please do consider participating in our CEO Finalist Day on August 28in some way. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate every interested parent, but I will work with the search committee to make sure that the final parent group represents the diversity of our entire parent community.
If you have any questions about Vision 2020, Homecoming 2015, the Finalist Day for our CEO Search, or other elements of our school and programs, you can always reach out to your principal directly, or to me at sshah@elhaynes.org or (202) 667.4446 ext 2320.
I look forward to seeing you on campus in the coming weeks!
Sincerely,
Shivam M. Shah
Interim Executive Director

DACA RENEWAL
Attention Families- if you have DACA, it's very important to renew it between 4 and 5 months before it expires! This is the period in which USCIS recommends people apply. Think of this as your "Ideal Application Zone". Applying during this 1-month "ideal zone" will help ensure that you get your DACA renewed on time before your current DACA expires. If a person's DACA goes out of status it could leave then in a very difficult situation with work, internships, scholarships and college. Please visit In English http://unitedwedream.org/daca-renewal-plan/ and In Spanish http://unitedwedream.org/dacarenovacionenvivo/

MEET THE DEPARTMENT HEADS
Hello Haynes family! My name is Lois Jones-Smith, and I am the Assistant Director of Student Support Services. I began my career in education in the Baltimore City Public School System in which I served as a Program Support Teacher, Instructional Associate, and Special Education Specialist for over ten years. I served the School District of the City of York and Baltimore County Public Schools as a Special Education Specialist and Supervisor for over 7 years. I also had the opportunity to serve students as a Acting Principal in the School District of the City of York. I am glad to be apart of the E.L. Haynes family to share my experiences and grow professionally. My formal higher education was completed at Coppin State College (Bachelor of Science) and the University of Baltimore (Dual Masters Degree Program with Coppin State College). As the Assistant Director of Student Support Services, I aim to ensure that students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate education that will prepare them to graduate high school and pursue a career. I look forward to working with my new family.
Greetings Haynes family! My name is Deena Marshall-Martins, and I am the new Director of English Language Learning. I received my BA in Sociology from The University of Michigan (Go Blue!) and have a MAT with a focus on TESOL from American University. This is my 2nd year at Haynes, where I served last year as a 3rd and 4th grade ESL Teacher. I have worked in education for 8 years and am excited about the opportunity to serve our English language learning families. Our department is here to support students who are acquiring English so they can succeed in school and beyond. I manage the ELL program on all three campuses by handling identification, assessment, compliance, parent involvement, and the development of our instructional services. Please reach out to me with any questions at dmartins@elhaynes.org.
Hello Haynes family! My name is Tia Marie Brumsted, and I am the Director of Student Wellness. I received my BA in Psychology from Spelman College and have a master's degree from Smith College School for Social Work. This is my 5th year at Haynes, and I have been practicing school social work in the DC area for ten years. Our student wellness team is here to support students' social, emotional, and health needs so students are confident, proud, and ready to succeed academically. I work closely with the elementary, middle, and high school campus social workers, school counselors and nurses. Please reach out to me with any questions at tbrumsted@elhaynes.org.

FAREWELL, MR. POHLMAN!
I wanted to share the exciting news that Rich Pohlman is the newly appointed Interim Executive Director of the Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter School. Like E.L. Haynes, Thurgood Marshall Academy (TMA) has a long history of commitment to equity and college readiness for DC students. TMA currently serves nearly 400 students primarily from Wards 7 and 8, and is located in the historic Anacostia neighborhood.
Rich has certainly left his mark at E.L. Haynes! Having worn so many hats during his 4+ year tenure, he has led efforts as visible as building the new soccer field, as critical as managing student enrollment, as thankless as running the Vision 2020 planning effort, and everything related to facilities, operations and (at times) human resources too. It's not unusual to see Rich literally rolling up his sleeves to do whatever it takes to get the job at-hand done. His steadfast commitment to E.L. Haynes has been even more crucial during this past year of transition on so many fronts. Rich is a tireless leader and advocate for DC kids and families - a role he will continue to play from his new perch in the coming weeks. And although Rich will no longer work at E.L. Haynes, you will likely see him at school as he will remain an E.L. Haynes parent!
Please join me in wishing Rich well in his next chapter.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
It has been a busy summer of construction at E.L. Haynes! We completed a major renovation to the 2nd floor at the elementary school, made a new classroom on the 3rd floor of the middle school and are nearly finished with our field project. We are so excited for our new facilities!
Over the coming weeks and months you will see that we are completing the landscaping around the field, installing all the finishing touches on fencing around the Kansas Avenue property and starting to patch and paint the exterior of the elementary school.
This winter and spring, you can expect that we will continue our updates inside the elementary school as we schedule remodeling in our remaining bathrooms over our school breaks and also schedule upgrades to our pre-kindergarten playground.
Please look for information about our upcoming projects and notices for meetings to gather parent input.
