PRINCIPAL'S LETTER

Peace Mighty MS Families,

This is our last week of PARCC testing! Our scholars have demonstrated perseverance and grit. Our fifth grader scholars will take the final PARCC assessment in ELA, Math and Science this week. Please remind your scholars that they should transition at a level 0 this week from 9:00-12:00 pm. Scholars who meet this expectation will earn PARCC bucks for grade level incentives such as a full dress down pass and a roller skating trip.

We are excited, but sad, to announce that Ms. Lisa Apple will be leaving our school community. She is joining the Peace Corps! For the next two years, Ms. Apple will serve as an education volunteer in the Federated States of Micronesia & Palau. Ms. Apple has served as an inclusion teacher and Math Interventionist while at Haynes. Ms. Apple will surely be missed. Our scholars and staff gave Ms. Apple an amazing bony voyage celebration. Ms. Apple, we will see you soon once you return back to the states.

I hope that each family joins us for the MS rendition of Peter Pan! Please join us on May 29th at 7:00 pm and May 30th at 5:00 pm at the Kansas Avenue Campus. Lastly, please join us for our annual End of Year Celebration. This will be held on Saturday, May 30th from 10:00-1:00 pm at the Kansas Avenue Campus.

As always, thank you for supporting our shared mission. We are indebted to your patience and commitment.

In Service of our shared Mission,

Myron Long

Middle School Principal

TOAST TO TRANSFORMATION

Thank You for Toasting with Us!

E.L. Haynes' fourth annual Toast to Transformation event was incredibly successful, thanks to the support of many individuals who share in our passion and commitment to DC students.

More than 300 guests gathered at the Long View Gallery on May 14 to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating seniors, get a glimpse of our students' artistic talents, and also hear the profound testimony of our senior student speaker Katy Reyes. In addition, we honored Kaya Henderson and Jennie Niles, two beloved and determined DC education leaders.

As our guests learned, E.L. Haynes' Class of 2015 has brought in more than $3.5 million in merit scholarships, and 100% of the class has been accepted to college!

This event raised more than $125,000 in support of E.L. Haynes' work and nearly $25,000 toward the newly-established E.L. Haynes College Support Fund, which will ensure we are able to help our students not only get to college, but through college. It's not too late; CLICK HERE to make your donation of any amount to support E.L. Haynes students' journey through college.

Thank you to all those who were able to attend, volunteer or support E.L. Haynes through this special and fun event. We look forward to Toasting to Transformation with you in 2016!

SPORTS AWARD CEREMONY

The MS Sports Award Ceremony will be Wed, June 10, 6pm - 9pm in the GA Gym. Like last year, we will honor our student athletes with a potluck style dinner. Families will be contributing a dish for the evening. MS Student Athletes will be bringing home invitations/flyers for parents to RSVP and indicate what Potluck dish they will bring. If you have any questions, please contact: Brent Bass Director of Athletics, Health & Fitness at [email protected] or 202-667-4446 ext 3030.

DRAMA TEAM PERFORMANCE

Our Middle School drama team will be showcasing Peter Pan on May 29th at 7:00 PM and May 30th at 5:00 PM in the Elementary School stage. This superb adaptation captures all the magic and charm of everyone's favorite story, Peter Pan. Join us, for one or both of the shows!

END OF YEAR CELEBRATION

Come out and celebrate the end of another school year with a cook-out, multicultural cuisine, live music and dance performed by talented Haynes students, and much more!

The goal for this event is to celebrate the rich diversity of the Haynes community. We invite ALL families to make a dish to share that reflects your family heritage, and invite you to volunteer to grill or lead a fun activity!

To sign up to volunteer on May 30 or if you have questions, contact Cherrelle Swain at [email protected] or 202-667-4446 x 1112
