LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Peace Mighty Middle School Families,

I hope that you find this email in peace and good health.

At the MS, we desire to create a culture where each member of our community is a reflective practitioner. A reflective practitioner is someone who consistently reflects on their practice.

Our students should always reflect on their scholarly work. In addition, they should reflect on their daily choices. We provide students with a variety of opportunities to reflect on their practice.

On February 13, 2015, students will have a chance to reflect on their practice. They will meet with their advisor to review and reflect on their academic and behavioral progress for Quarter 2. Parents will meet with their advisors to review their student grades using the portal. The ultimate goal of that meeting is for students to reflect with their families and make a plan of action to increase their grades and study habits. If parents want more information about all of the classes that their scholars attend, they can email those teachers directly.

In the next two weeks, you should expect a phone call from your student's advisor to arrange a meeting. I am personally inviting each family to have their parent-student-advisor conference with their advisor on Friday, February 13, 2015.

Here are a few questions to help your scholar prepare for the conference:

  • Do my grades reflect how hard I worked in that class? Why or why not?
  • Do I arrive to school every day on time (before 8:45am)?
  • Do I have all necessary materials when I arrive to class?
  • Do I complete and return my homework daily
  • Do I return my Mountain Lion Note Signed each night?

I look forward to seeing all of you on February 13, 2015, for our parent-student-adviser conference.

One additional note, please remind your scholars that they need to go straight to school in the morning and not make any stops on the way to school as breakfast is provided. Scholars need to go straight home after dismissal. They are not allowed to stop at the store unless they are with a parent or guardian.

We always close with our school mantra: We believe in the infinite capacity of your scholar to achieve their dreams, go to the college of their choice and change their communities.

In Peace,

Myron Long

Middle School Principal

PRESENTATION & UPDATE FROM SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

The Haynes Family Team invites you to join E.L. Haynes school leaders for an informative presentation and Q&A about our Middle School program on Tuesday, February 10, at 6:00pm in the fourth floor PD Room.

Chief Academic Officer Phyllis Hedlund will share information about the Common Core, PARCC, and other key elements of the academic program. Rich Pohlman, Acting Head of School, will lead a conversation about the school's five-year strategic plan, and Board Member Abby Smith will update families on the process to select Haynes' next Head of School. Refreshments will be served!

WEEK OF LOVE is FEBRUARY 9-13

Next week, February 9-13, we will celebrate the WEEK OF LOVE on all campuses. The WEEK OF LOVE is the centerpiece of the E.L. Haynes Family Giving Campaign's annual efforts to raise critical funds from families to help support our school.

It's not too late to get involved! Join us this Friday evening, February 6, from 6-8pm at Kansas Avenue to set up, or contact Sharlene Simon at [email protected] to sign up for a shift during the week.

This exciting week is an opportunity for parents to interact in a casual setting, make a gift of any amount, and be added to our E.L. Haynes WALL OF LOVE 2015.

Let's come together and SHOW OUR LOVE for E.L. Haynes!
