LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Peace Mighty Middle School Families,

I hope this letter finds you in peace and understanding. At Haynes, we seek to create a community where feedback is part of our daily practice for teachers and students. We explicitly teach that feedback isn't negative. In fact, it's neutral. We explain to our scholars that feedback is brain food that helps you get better and smarter. At the MS, we use a variety of different methods to give students feedback.

Each night, students bring home their Mountain Lion Note. This is one way that students get feedback on their behavior. It's also a method that parents can use to give feedback to teachers or ask questions about their student's experience at the MS.

In our classes, each teacher has a method to assess students on the standard/skill that was to be mastered for that day. Scholars are given feedback on each of their assignments so that they can move closer to mastery. Scholars also give each other feedback on their work in class. At the MS, we call it peer-to-peer feedback.

Our advisory system serves as a vehicle for students to get feedback from their advisors. In advisory, students are also taught how to give feedback to adults and students. We teach them that any feedback that they want to give should be at the right time, in the right tone, and with the right body language.

At the end of the day, we want all of our scholars to know that feedback helps you grow. Please support our efforts to develop a culture of feedback.

Here are a few examples:

  • Review your scholars HW and let them know which questions/problems were correct or incorrect and ask them to redo those problems
  • Have them read aloud to you and teach them how to pronunciation unfamiliar words

In closing, I recently saw a teacher giving feedback to a student about their behavior. The teacher praised the student for taking redirection well and the student responded, "It's just feedback." It is just feedback.

We always close with our school mantra: we believe in the infinite capacity of our scholars to achieve their dreams, attend the college of their choice, and change their communities.

In Peace,

Myron Long

Middle School Principal

8th GRADE STUDENT SHADOW DAYS AT

E.L. HAYNES  HIGH SCHOOL

We know that the transition from Middle School to High School is an important time for students and families. In order to make this transition as comfortable as possible we have Shadow Days in January for our 8th graders to experience E.L. Haynes High School.

Students will tour the building, meet Principal Caroline Hill, Assistant Principals Daniel Malec and Romaine Stover, and the 9th grade team, and sit in on high school classes.

Already, two High School shadow days took place in December and earlier in January. Additional 8th grade Student Shadow Days to the High School will take place on January 22, 2015, and January 26, 2015.

8th GRADE PARENT VISIT DAYS AT E.L. HAYNES HIGH SCHOOL

In order to get a feel for a school day at Haynes, 8th grade parents are invited for coffee, light breakfast and time in the High School classrooms. These visit days will take place on February 11 and 12 from 9:00 to 10:30 AM.

To RSVP, please contact Cherrelle Swain, Family Engagement Manager, at [email protected] or 202-667-4446 ext 1122.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS

Inclement Weather-Delayed Opening

In the case of a delayed opening of school due to inclement weather, the before-school program schedule will also be delayed for the corresponding amount of time. For example, if the opening of school is a 2-hour delay, then the before-school program would open at 9:30am. Please remember that E.L. Haynes follows DCPS for weather-related delays and closings.

Middle School Clubs and Activities

Spring Middle School Clubs and Activities are set to launch on Monday, January 26. The registration packets will be disseminated on Tuesday, January 20.

KANSAS AVENUE CAMPUS FIELD PROJECT

We are excited to share an update on our Kansas Avenue Campus Field Project! We have officially submitted our permits to the city and presented our plans to the local ANC. We will break ground later this spring (after the ground has thawed, likely in April or May) and anticipate that the project will take four months to complete. Our goal is to have the field ready in August for our 2015-2016 school year.

To learn more, please join us on January 28 from 6-8 PM at a Parent and Community Meeting about this project. The meeting will take place at the Kansas Avenue Campus, in the 3rd floor conference room.

WEEK OF LOVE is FEBRUARY 9-13

We are excited to announce that this year's WEEK OF LOVE is February 9-13, 2015 and will be celebrated on all campuses. The WEEK OF LOVE is the centerpiece of the E.L. Haynes Family Giving Campaign's annual efforts to raise critical funds from families to help support our school. It is complimented by the opportunity for parents to interact in a casual setting and volunteer your services or time. Stop by the table for some light refreshments, stay and chat with one of our SHOW YOUR LOVE Volunteers or grab your coffee to go. While you're there, if you make a gift of any amount, you will receive a one-of-a-kind E.L. Haynes car magnet and be added to our E.L. Haynes WALL OF LOVE 2015.

In preparation for this exciting week, we are looking for a few good men and women to help with set-up (Friday 2/6, evening) and interact with folks at the table during the week (1-hour shifts Monday 2/9-Friday 2/13, morning/afternoon). Interested? Contact Sharlene Simon at [email protected] to sign up or with questions.

Let's come together and SHOW OUR LOVE for E.L. Haynes!

Please note that many immigrant families are of "mixed status," with different family members having different immigration and citizenship statuses. "Mixed status" families can apply for Medicaid and CHIP or for coverage through the Marketplace, where dependent family members may be eligible for programs that help lower the cost of Marketplace health insurance coverage. People without lawful immigration status are not eligible to enroll in the Marketplace. Medicaid provides payment for treatment for an emergency medical condition for individuals who do not meet the citizenship or immigration status requirements for Medicaid and are otherwise eligible for Medicaid in the state. It is important to note that information provided by applicants or beneficiaries will not be used for immigration enforcement purposes. Federal and state Marketplaces and state Medicaid and CHIP agencies cannot require applicants to provide information about the citizenship or status of any family or household member who is not applying for coverage. Therefore, mixed status families should not be afraid to apply.

Hip-Hop is a community that works to master a set of artistic forms and cultural practices created to transform the lives of individual artists and their communities. By engaging Hip-Hop as a community of cultural practitioners, we affirm the value of both the art and the artists themselves. At the heart of all we do is the belief that for its practitioners and participants Hip-Hop often acts as the path towards Self Mastery also known as Knowledge of Self.
