Summer Greetings!
Last month we filmed an advertisement (see video clip below) about our ingredients which includes footage of real tea leaves. Once the shoot was over, we brought some small tea bushes back to our office. Though tea bushes (scientifically known as Camellia sinesis) are not indigenous to the United States, they can be grown here. There are a few tea plantations in the United States (there's one in South Carolina and one in Hawaii), but without the mountainous soil and tropical atmosphere found in India and China, tea leaves grown on this continent don't meet our desired taste profile. The last time we had tea bushes in Bethesda was back in 2005, when Honest Tea participated in the Smithsonian Museum's Folk Life Festival. Once the festival was over, I kept the bushes outside my house - they survived for a few months but eventually succumbed to the snow and frost of a mid-Atlantic winter. We'll do our best to keep our office tea plants alive a little longer.
Best wishes for the start of the summer. Honestly Yours,
