November Greetings,

We've just wrapped up Honest Tea's annual company meeting - these gatherings are always important gut-checks on the company's culture and spirit.  I'm delighted to say that both are in great health - in fact many long-term employees commented that they couldn't remember a time when they were more excited about the work we're doing and the opportunities still ahead for us.  In addition to our Color War and discussions about company strategy and growth, we got the chance to celebrate two employees who marked their tenth year with the company (see below) as well as recognize employees who made major strides with their personal health.  There are many things to be grateful for as we enter this season of Thanks, but the energy and commitment of the 112 employees of Honest Tea is certainly at the top of my list.

Honestly yours,

Fair Trade Tea Garden in Korakunda, India
Stories of Impact
Ever wondered how many people are drinking tea across the globe or the true impact of Fair Trade Certification™? We recently sat down with one of our very first tea suppliers who has worked with us since the early days of brewing tea in Seth's kitchen. We wanted to learn more about her experience with organic tea gardens and gain some insight into the real difference that Fair Trade™ makes, from someone who has seen these communities first hand. Some of the highlights include:
  • 85% of tea consumed in the USA is iced
  • Last year, over 65 billion servings of tea were consumed around the world
  • Makaibari Tea Garden, one of Honest Tea's first sources for Fair Trade™ Tea, was the 1st estate to be certified Fair Trade™ in the world.
  • Fair Trade™ ensures the tea is purchased at a fair price with fair labor conditions and a democratic/transparent structure at each tea garden community.
  • Fair Trade™ takes into account environmental sustainability, as synthetic pesticides are not permitted at any point in the production: from growing tea bushes, to when the leaves are plucked, to when you open a bottle of refreshing Honest Tea.
  • The growing region, proximity to the coast, altitude and sunlight all affect the flavor and body of your tea-the smoothness, acidic notes and color of the tea are subject to these variables.

Creating the Future

Most of our staff works away from Bethesda, in teams of one, or two, or sometimes more, spread across the country. Our annual company meeting at Honest Tea Headquarters brings us together to celebrate the passing year, and plan together for the next - and everyone is included, from senior management to the newest employee. Catching up with each other is great fun, as is our all-company Color War involving a competitive game of dodge ball and kickball. We also spent time analyzing the business and discussing what our aspirations are for Honest Tea. We heard from one of our expert tea brokers about the empowerment that organic and Fair Trade brings to our tea garden communities. And, we celebrate the personal and professional accomplishments of our colleagues-including a celebration this year of two employees who have reached 10 years of outstanding dedication in our company: Mandy C. and Mikey P; we thank them for their tremendous contribution over the years. This year, our wellness coach, Rebecca Bly, led a calming yoga session to help bring the company meeting to a close. Finally, we revealed our 2013 motivational quote - which we'd like to share with you:
