I found out this month that we lost someone who played a central role in Honest Tea's early years.  George Scalf was our original Brewmaster.  He was also a musician, entrepreneur and friend.

On a Sunday evening in March of 1998 George drove down from Ontario in his purple Jeep.  Since it was about dinnertime, I invited him to join us for dinner and sleep over at our house rather than worry about finding a hotel.  He ended up staying with us for more than 6 months, as he helped me find my way through that challenging first year of the business.  He also became close with my family - our boys marveled at how we would seem to pull his finger apart and then reconnect it.

George had run a few different beverage and organic produce companies.  He also worked as a recording artist, and knew a little bit about everything.  He also had a wry sense of irony, and helped me keep things in perspective.  During one of our first production runs of Kashmiri Chai we were dunking bags of spices over a boiling tank, but we weren't getting the right infusion, so we poured the spices into a barrel and George stood over the barrel with a propeller mixer.  Then when we tried to filter the infusion into a tank, the pipes got clogged and the tea and spices sprayed everywhere.  As George put it, "Well, this is a very Chai-ing experience."  He kept his sense of humor as he helped us find bottling plants and played a central role in designing our first tea basket brewing system, remnants of which can still be found in our office.

George was always a believer in Honest Tea - he likened our brand to a recording artist - he said, "Sometimes you hear a person sing a song and you just know she is going to be a star.  When I read the Honest Tea business plan, I knew you had a hit on your hands."  If it hadn't been for George Scalf's early help, Honest Tea might not have become the brand it is today.  We remember him fondly and sadly, and have made a donation in his honor to Woodwyn Farms  www.woodwynnfarms.org.  I am attaching a picture of George from one of our earliest guerilla marketing events, when we were trying to spread Honest Tea on Capitol Hill.

Honestly yours,

Seth
