Where did binary sex come from, and where should it go?
Time: 7:30 - 9:00pm Date: Saturday, June 22, 2013
Location: Milwaukee LGBT Community Center (1110 N. Market Street, 2nd floor, Milwaukee, WI) |
Dr. Cary Costello
| Description: In every world society, some people are born intersex, and some people don't identify with the sex assigned to them at birth. Whether these people will have difficult or easy lives, be fully socially accepted or live at the social margins, varies widely across cultures and between times. In Western societies it has been complicated by an ideology of binary sex and gender: that people are "naturally" born with one of two different sets of genitals, and that which set they have will determine their "natural" gender. We will explore where this ideology originated, how it spread, and how it complicates the lives of intersex individuals, genderqueer people, and trans folks with binary gender identities. We'll also think about what could be done to improve the situation..

Thanks to the 33 volunteers who donated their time, energy, and commitment to improving the lives of trans* people, loved ones, and those in the broader LGBTQ and allied communities.
Collectively we had a major impact on creating and supporting a tone of kindness, acceptance, appreciation for diversity, and even love on the PrideFest grounds. Offering hugs (or hug stickers - over 8,000 of them!), encouraging the freedom of expression on buttons (over 3,000) or on the healthy relationship mini-mural, and helping usher in attendees through the protesters all made a huge difference.
FORGE staff is especially grateful for some of our "super volunteers" - people who worked long hours, who helped pick up at the end of both long days, and who were creative, cheerful, and flexible - willing to step in and do whatever was necessary. We deeply appreciate all of you!
