Art is a very integral part of our everyday life. Not only is it about the art on the walls or the sculpture, but it is part of everything we use. It is in the design of our dinner ware, furniture, textiles and even our technology. So, this month, we wanted to show off one of the ways that we live with beautiful art by sharing a recipe.
Fresh Fig Cake
Below is a recipe from Linda Crouch, one of the ladies that works with us.
Many neighbors in our area in Eastern NC have fig trees in their yard. So it's a wonderful time picking them and having fresh fruit for this cake. Frozen ones will also work. Linda has been making this cake for years and it is always a big favorite with her family and friends.
Fresh Fig Cake
3 eggs
2 cup sugar
2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup mashed figs (drain, don't cook. Frozen uncooked figs can be substituted)
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup chopped nuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a Bundt or tube cake pan.
Mix sugar, oil, eggs and milk in a large bowl. Mix remaining dry ingredients together, then add them to the egg mixture. Stir in figs and nuts until blended well but not beaten in with a blender.
Bake for 1 hour and cool completely in the pan. Enjoy! We did. This delicious cake is on a beautiful hand painted cake plate by Margaret Suber. Click plate for more details about it.

September Birthstone - Sapphire
Sapphire, Diamond and 14kt White Gold Ring
The birthstone for September is the sapphire. The most common color is blue, but it can also be white, pink, orange and green.
The sapphire, was once thought to guard against evil and poisoning. It was believed that a venomous snake would die if placed in a vessel made of sapphire. Traditionally a favorite stone of priests and kings, the sapphire symbolizes purity and wisdom.
