What is a Monotype?
Greetings!

It's summer! An incredible selection of new art has arrived and we have been busy getting information about them on our website.

We had a fabulous 24th International Miniature Art Show this past May. Click awards to see the winners.  Denis Romecki has written a wonderful article that you can read at Wave Sculptures.

What Is A Monotype?
This monotype is by David Hunter

A monotype is a painterly, one of a kind, original print. The artist creates it by rolling, brushing or daubing ink on a metal plate (usually copper or zinc), glass or plexiglass.  Paper is placed on top and it is rolled through an etching press. The ink transfers from the plate to the paper and the resulting work of art is known as a monotype.

Monotypes are unique because only one or two impressions may be pulled before the ink is used up. Although there may be a second impression, it is quite different from the first in that most of the ink was lifted from the plate in its first pass through the press. The second impression, called a ghost, is much lighter or thinner and is more of a suggestion of the first.

So why would an artist create a monotype instead of just doing a painting? This medium has a unique translucency in the colors that creates a quality of light very different from a painting on paper.  Many effects can be achieved in monotypes that are not possible with any other technique.

This medium was first used in the 1600's and has been used by many famous artists over the centuries, including Rembrandt and Picasso.  Click Hunter for more information about the illustrated art.
