"The Voice" has been a popular music competition on TV that I've enjoyed watching. As much as I've enjoyed music, I've never stopped to consider all of the technical aspects and concerns that the musicians have when performing. When critiquing the vocalists, the judges would often talk about pitch, breathing, tone, confidence, believability, and artistic expression. It gave me a new appreciation for the work and effort that goes into being a performer.
Judging a work of art is very similar to what Adam, Usher, Shakira, and Blake do when judging music. The difference is that with a work of art you are judging the technical merits of perspective, light, color, motion, proportion, composition and form. You want to see that the artist understands the medium and subject matter that they choose to work with so that they handle it in a confident manner.
Just as there are many good contestants on "The Voice", there are many technically good artists. What sets the exceptional ones apart is the same qualities that sets aside the exceptional vocalists. The artist is able to truly convey their own unique style and vision in an authentic way. They've created a two dimensional or three dimensional object and injected it with emotional expression that connects with the audience.
What I learned was that although the vocalists and artists were working in two different disciplines, they are both trying to do the same thing. They put in long hours, practice and study to perfect their craft in order to express themselves in a way that it enhances all of our lives.
