Encaustic Paint

"Hidden Cove", encaustic miniature painting by Wilma Lopez

Pharaohs ruled Egypt when encaustic painting was first used. This ancient paint has waxed and waned in use over the centuries, but was made popular again by such 20th century artists as Jasper Johns and Diego Rivera.

This ancient painting technique binds colored pigments with beeswax.  The wax must be heated and while it is in its liquid state manipulated across a surface to create the image.

Artists use a variety of tools when working with encaustic paint. Some of them are electric irons, hotplates, heated stylus, hot air gun and brushes.  The paint can be applied to a variety of surfaces such as board, canvas, special papers and pottery.

Once the wax hardens, it is very durable.  Archeologist have been amazed at the brightness and clarity that the colors maintain over time.

Wilma Lopez and Carol Lopez are two artists in our Miniature Art Show that have used this medium.

"Bombardment off Fort Hatteras", watercolor lithograph by Currier & Ives
We have been experiencing a painful time because our website was hacked on March 20th.  The company that promised to repair it, did not pull through, so it had to be rebuilt.

It has finally gone live.  I've been putting updates on our Facebook page and really appreciate all of the encouragement and good wishes.

The encouraging news is that there was not any personal information on it that could have been jeopardized.

You can see more art for Currier and Ives.

Obsidian
Sterling Silver and Carved Obsidian Bracelet
This rock is formed when lava cools. It's usually dark but can vary depending on the different impurities present when it is formed. At times, gas bubbles caused by the lava flow can create a golden sheen within the rock. This has been used for jewelry, weapons, tool, plates, bowls and other objects.

Legend has it that it brings the energy of the Earth to the wearer.
