What is Plein Air Art?

"A Study in Progress", oil painting by Gregory Kavalec

Have you ever watched an artist painting in the great outdoors? If so, you were watching "Plein Air" art being created. This is a French term which means 'open air' and it refers to the practice of an artist painting on site instead of in a studio. The Italian term for this is "alfresco".

This practice started in the late 1800's and was made possible by the development of paints sold in tubes, portable equipment and material. Prior to this, the artists had apprentices that had to grind the pigments and make the paints which made it very difficult to haul all of the minerals, oil, mortar and pestles around.

The impressionists were especially enamored of plein art painting. It allowed them to observe the influence of how the changing sunlight impacts color. This challenges the artist to intently focus on their subjects. Their senses are filled with the sights, sounds, temperature and atmosphere which is then channeled into their vision of it on canvas. Plein air artists often achieve brilliant colors that practically shimmer.

Working from life continues to excite and challenge artists today. There are many associations of plein air painters. Two of the most prestigious is the PAPA (Plein Air Painters of America) and The National Academy of Professional Plein Air Painters.

Suzanne Morris, Janet Pierce and EM Corsa are artists that create plein air art.

"Living with the Wild Horses of the Outer Banks", oil painting by Sun Bauer
We are thrilled to be hosting the "Animals in Art Show" again this year. This will feature beautiful works of art of domestic animals and wildlife. A portion of each sale of any item in the gallery that features an animal will go to the Outer Banks SPCA to help our animal friends find their "furever" home. The show is from February 2, 2013 to March 2, 2013. The reception will be Feb 7 from 6pm to 8pm. Mark your calendars for this fun event.

New Artist - Suzanne Morris
Red Sail, oil painting by Suzanne Morris

We are happy to be representing Suzanne Morris.

She uses broken color and expressive brushwork to convey her impressions of a subject. She does not try to tell the whole story... just enough to say what is important to her, then allows viewers to "finish" the piece for themselves; thereby making each painting more personal. She is fascinated by the play of light and shadow. It is the effect light has on a subject that draws her to it. The patterns created by light falling across a subject can transform an ordinary scene into an extraordinary one. It is the magic she feels when she comes across one of these scenes that she tries to capture on her canvases. This is accomplished by strict adherence to light and shadow patterns, and the use of vivid, descriptive color, and bold expressive brushwork. If she does everything just right, she is able to share a piece of that magic with those who view her work."

14kt Two tone Gold and Diamond Ring
Valentine's Day is a popular romantic day to become engaged or to be married.

The first wedding rings were made of rushes and reeds by the ancient Egyptians. Over the centuries, many other cultures have used rings made of leather, stone, aluminum, and metal. Today, wedding rings are almost always made of gold, silver, or platinum.
