From the Principal

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

Fall is in the air, which means that Halloween is not far behind. I'd like to share our plans and how you can help make this a safe, special day for children.

The students love to dress up in a variety of costumes, parade at school and then take to the streets, knocking on doors in search of special treats. On Friday, October 30, we will have our Halloween parade at 10:45 a.m. on the blacktop. We ask that children not wear masks (they impede vision), bring weapons or wear blood as any part of their costume. Children will be seated in a large oval on the blacktop with their class. Three to four classes will parade at a time so all can see and be seen. We ask that parents stand outside the oval. Please do not wear masks.

I want you to understand the school's policy regarding photographs. At any school event, you should only take photos of your own child. No photos of children other than your own may be shared over the internet, either by email or posted on websites. Posting photographs of children other than your own on photo-share sites such as Shutterfly or social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube is not allowed. Some families have specifically asked that their child's photo not be distributed in any way other than in the classroom. It is our legal responsibility to honor this request.

We ask you, too, to please not send candy to school for snack or lunchtime. With your support and cooperation, I'm sure we'll have another safe and colorful Halloween at Las Lomitas.

Until next time,
Alain Camou
Principal

Minimum Day Information

MINIMUM DAY INFORMATION
We will be on a minimum day schedule November 9, 10, 12, and 13. November 11 was intentionally skipped as it is Veteran's Day, a school holiday. On the four minimum days, all students will arrive at 9:00 and be dismissed at 12:20.

To minimize the chaos this creates please note:

Flagpole Pick-up
  • All students will wait in designated locations by grade.
  • Drivers must stay in their car and pull through the pick-up lane.
  • Display name cards in the window.
  • Leave dogs at home.
  • Bicyclists must walk bikes until you are away from the front gate area.
  • Traffic and parking enforcement will be present. Park in designated locations only.

Bus Riders
  • Students may not ride on a bus other than their regular bus for a play date during minimum days. Only regular riders may ride. We are at capacity. Pick up play dates at the flag pole, please.
  • If students go to the bus for a play date, we will bring both students (regular rider and guest) to the office for pick up.
  • Buses may be a bit late as it takes longer to load and unload on minimum days.

The Apple for the Classroom program is a way for parents to
support their children's teachers directly.  All the teachers and specialists at Las Lomitas have been invited to create a "wish
list" of items that would help to further enrich their classrooms.  Wishes may include art supplies, gift cards, books, or donations toward a special activity or field trip.

To view the lists, please visit our website:

Once at the site, select the list you want to view. Teachers' lists are divided into two sections, so you can choose to bring an item directly to the classroom or you can choose to make a donation via PayPal.

Thank you for supporting our teachers and enriching your children's experience at Las Lomitas.

Box Tops for Education
boxtops

Please continue to clip, collect, and submit box top coupons found on many favorite brands such as Betty Crocker, Nature Valley, Kleenex, Huggies, Ziploc, and so many more. Las Lomitas earns 10 cents for each box top submitted, and these really add up! Box tops can be turned in any time to the cereal box in the Las Lomitas office.

Write your student's name and room number on the bag containing the box tops to be eligible for our prize drawing.  Thank you for supporting our school!

Fridays are Spirit Days at Las Lomitas!

BASKETBALL SEASON and REGISTRATION

Registration has closed and we're preparing for the upcoming player evaluations and team formation this weekend, October 24-25. Schedules are posted on our website, and you should also get an email from a grade-level division coordinator confirming your child's evaluation time. If you volunteered to be an Evaluation Day Assistant, you will be notified about the time to arrive. If you haven't been contacted, please email  Kathleen Liston.

Coaches announce their teams and practice schedule about a week after player evaluations, once we've finalized rosters. Practices begin in mid-November, Menlo Park League games (3rd-7th grade) begin Friday, Dec. 4th and MPMSL (8th grade) games begin Monday, Dec. 14. Additional information about the basketball program can be found on our website.

Mark your calendars for the following dates:
  • Wed, Oct. 21st at 6:30pm: Mandatory Coaches Meeting in the La Entrada library. We will finalize practice times and review rules, expectations, evaluations, etc.
  • Oct. 24th& 25th (Sat/Sun): Player Evaluation Days (schedule to be determined). Evaluations are used strictly to divide each grade level into fair and balanced teams. Your child's grade/division will be assigned a specific day and time closer to the date. Please check back here or on the LLL Basketball webpage in mid-October.

Halloween Costume Drive

Please help the families of Haven House Family Shelter have a great Halloween week, participate in their school and many other Halloween events, by donating new or gently used costumes in all sizes (infant through adult).  The Girl Scout troops of Las Lomitas and La Entrada are working together with Suzanne Mitchell (LLESD Technology Director) to collect costumes at both schools.  (The bins will be out at both schools until 10/21)

Haven House, part of Innvision/Shelter Network, offers emergency and transitional housing for homeless families.  Each night almost 100 kids (infants to teens) call the shelter home while their parents are working to move them back to permanent housing.  Your donation of Halloween costumes will offer that these families can participate in the fun of the season at a very difficult time in their lives!

Any questions: contact Suzanne Mitchell suzannemitch@gmail.com
Both school sites support and encourage your support.

Thank you

Tell Our City Council How to Make Menlo Park Truly Bike Friendly

The Menlo Park City Council is currently considering a field trial of bike lanes on El Camino Real but is not evaluating the alternative of an east-west bike connection across this highway. Re-Imagine Menlo Park, a local website/blog, invites all residents to tell our city leaders which investment in our community bike network would be most beneficial for them and their families.

Please spend a few minutes to complete an online survey - whether you and you family currently ride bikes, or not - and encourage your friends and neighbors to do so, as well. Initial survey results will be published in October.
