LLFLas Lomitas Education Foundation

The 2015-16 Annual Giving Campaign has launched!

This year we have added a special boost...Announcing the Giving by Grade Challenge:
The grade with the highest giving level WINS $200 per classroom for extra supplies and activities!

Donate before November 13, 2015, and help your child's grade level WIN!
DONATE NOW at www.LLEF.org

The Annual Giving Campaign is the Foundation's mission-critical fundraising effort, directly supporting the LLESD's operating budget to help provide "excellence in education" at our schools.  This year, we are asking for a donation of $2,000 per student. If you are unable to give this amount, any amount that is meaningful to your family will help us reach our goal of 100% community participation.

We highly encourage - and greatly appreciate - gifts made before December 31, 2015 to assist the School Board with their budget planning.  Thank you in advance for your support!

From the Principal

Dear Families,

Fall is upon us and the weather finally feels like it is turning. I've never been more excited about steel gray skies, rain, and no blazing sunshine. We had our first rainy day schedule in a very long time on Wednesday. My apologies for sending home children, who were likely filled with extra pent up energy, but I must say they handled the first, in hopefully many indoor rainy days, very well.

As the weather changes and the roads begin to get wet and slick, I want to take a moment to mention safe practices during drop off and pick up. Please use designated crosswalks to walk to/from cars. Dismissal can be an especially busy time with people eagerly wanting to get home. Help them see you by walking in designated areas. Please refrain from using cell phones while in queue for drop off and pick up. Again, it is an active time with many small and not easily seen children around. Lastly, please remember that the left lane of the two lanes leading up to the drop off/pick-up area is a drive through lane only. Vehicles should not be parked and left unattended as it hinders the progress for everyone else.

Thank you all for your understanding and helping Las Lomitas maintain a safe environment for pickup and drop off.

Until next time,
Alain Camou

Please order your ART NOTECARDS

Each year Las Lomitas participates in a PTA Fundraiser for the Arts in our schools. Notecards are made from your children's drawings which were completed during the month of September. Funds from the sale of these notecards are used by classrooms for field trips, visiting artists, musicians, speakers, art supplies and literature about the arts. The notecards make terrific gifts for friends and families, thank you notes, and enclosure cards for birthdays. The printed notecards (with matching envelopes) will be delivered to the classrooms by end of November/early December. The order forms will be coming home on Monday October 12th.

This year we are only accepting PayPal (no checks) for purchases.  The payment MUST BE SUBMITTED Online by Friday, October 9th.  Please visit the PTA website for payments. Unfortunately, late orders cannot be accepted due to the early release for Thanksgiving.

Questions? Please contact Laaya Khamsi (laaya_khamsi@yahoo.com)

Thank you to all the teachers and volunteers who help make this possible and to the generous parents for supporting the creative arts in our schools.

The Apple for the Classroom program is a way for parents to
support their children's teachers directly.  All the teachers and specialists at Las Lomitas have been invited to create a "wish list" of items that would help to further enrich their classrooms.  Wishes may include arapplelogot supplies, gift cards, books, or donations toward a special activity or field trip.

To view the lists, please visit our website:

Once at the site, select the list you want to view. Teachers' lists are divided into two sections, so you can choose to bring an item directly to the classroom or you can choose to make a donation via PayPal.

Thank you for supporting our teachers and enriching your children's experience at Las Lomitas.

Box Tops for Education

Las Lomitas earns 10 cents for each box top submitted, and these really add up! Box tops can be turned in any time to the cereal box in the Las Lomitas office. Write your student's name and room number on the bag containing the box tops to be eligible for our prize drawing which will be held October 15.  Thank you for supporting our school!

School directories are coming in October
The school directory will be released in early October. It was held up this year due to some technical difficulties but we are working as quickly as we can to get it out to you.

Choicelunch and Jamba Juice are teaming up to bring Jamba Juice Smoothies to our school. Juice smoothies will be available to order as an addition to lunch every Thursday starting 10/8/15

A fresh and yummy 8oz. Jamba Juice can be added to lunch every Thursday for $2.25 when placing lunch orders on Choicelunch.com.  Currently, the smoothie add-on is not available on the iPhone or Android apps.

One flavor will be offered every Thursday with a running rotation of three flavors: Strawberry, Peach and Mango. Strawberry, being the most popular flavor, will be offered every other week with peach and mango rotated in between.

The smoothies are an "add-on" to a lunch order and can only be purchased when a lunch order
is placed. Students with a smoothie order will still get to select their normal snack, fruit and drink option in addition to their smoothie.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Hot Food Co-Chairs Heather Caelius and Adrianne Wonnacott at hotfood@llpta.org

BASKETBALL SEASON and REGISTRATION

Registration for the LLL Basketball Season is now open and closes at midnight on Thursday, October 15th.

This is a very popular winter sport that is open to all students in 3rd through 8th grade. Register early before divisions are full.

We will register 8-10 players per team. Once a division is full (based on number of coaches), we will start a wait-list and only add more players if we get more coaches to form another team. Register early and volunteer to coach!

Evaluations are the third weekend in October and coaches announce their teams a week later. Practices begin in mid-November, games begin in early December and the season ends in early March. Division coordinators will contact parents with more information towards the end of October. Additional information about the basketball program can be found on our website: http://laslomitasleague.com/

Coaches Wanted! We are a parent-run basketball league and we need coaches. You do not need a lot of experience to coach; we can pair you with a more experienced coach. We also provide an excellent coaching clinic. Please contact Kathleen Liston if you are interested in coaching.

Mark your calendars for the following dates:
  • Wed, Oct. 21st at 6:30pm: Mandatory Coaches Meeting in the La Entrada library. We will finalize practice times and review rules, expectations, evaluations, etc.
  • Oct. 24th& 25th (Sat/Sun): Player Evaluation Days (schedule to be determined). Evaluations are used strictly to divide each grade level into fair and balanced teams. Your child's grade/division will be assigned a specific day and time closer to the date. Please check back here or on the LLL Basketball webpage in mid-October.

Halloween Costume Drive

Please help the families of Haven House Family Shelter have a great Halloween week, participate in their school and many other Halloween events, by donating new or gently used costumes in all sizes (infant through adult).  The Girl Scout troops of Las Lomitas and La Entrada are working together with Suzanne Mitchell (LLESD Technology Director) to collect costumes at both schools.  (The bins will be out at both schools until 10/21)

Haven House, part of Innvision/Shelter Network, offers emergency and transitional housing for homeless families.  Each night almost 100 kids (infants to teens) call the shelter home while their parents are working to move them back to permanent housing.  Your donation of Halloween costumes will offer that these families can participate in the fun of the season at a very difficult time in their lives!

Any questions: contact Suzanne Mitchell suzannemitch@gmail.com
Both school sites support and encourage your support.

Thank you
