From the Principal

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

As we head into these last few weeks of school, I'd like you to look forward to next year and consider serving on one of the PTA committees, help with LLL before-after school program planning or take part in events sponsored by the Foundation. All of these parent organizations support the students and are much appreciated by all of us here at Las Lomitas.

Another way you could participate in school planning is to join the School Site Council (SSC). The School Site Council (SSC) is a group of faculty and parent representatives who meet over the course of the year to address areas of program quality under the School Based Coordinated Program. The Council's primary responsibilities are to review and monitor our Single Plan for Student Achievement and School Improvement Program budget.

Each member serves for two years. We meet once a month on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:30. This year's faculty representatives were Anna Pong (K), Tami Bannister (1st), Colene McKeon (2nd), Heather Hower (3rd) and Sue Sartor (Principal). Parent members were Artis Montague, Jung Eun Lee, Jen Le , Sarah Supple and Christine Kiekhaefer. We will have two vacancies for the 2015-2016 school year.

If you are interested in joining this group of dedicated parents and educators who monitor the school plan, make sure the budget supports the plan and care deeply about children and education, please join us. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to work with and learn from teachers and the administration.

If you would like to serve on the School Site Council or learn more about it, please contact me at 854-5900 ext.261 or by email at ssartor@llesd.org.

Until next time,

Sue Sartor

Principal

Congratulations! You've almost finished your first year here at Las Lomitas. We know next year is a big step for your little ones, and we're excited to help you take it and learn about more ways you can participate in the PTA now that you've gotten your feet wet.

Please join the PTA along with Sue Sartor and Alain Camou as we talk about hot lunch, First Fridays, Grandparents' Day, the big playground, and more! We'll also talk about how you can get more involved at school in the coming years now that you've gotten your feet wet.

From the Health Office

May is Allergy Awareness month!  In the United States, 1 in 13 children are affected by food allergies, many are life-threatening.  Food allergy reactions occur when the body's immune system mistakes a harmless food protein for a threat and attempts to attack and rid the body of the intruder.  This can lead to a serious medical emergency called anaphylaxis, which is life-threatening and needs to be treated immediately!

As a school and a community, we need to be aware of the potential dangers of food and other allergies.  In addition to food allergies, anaphylaxis can occur in people who are allergic to insect stings, medications/drugs, latex (found in things such as balloons, gloves and other common everyday items) and, in rare instances, can also have an unknown cause or be exercise-induced after ingesting an allergen.

Please remember to always check with your teachers or the school nurse before sending treats or food-based projects to school.  Safety is our priority with all of our students!  It is also important to teach children the importance of not sharing food with their classmates and to wash their hands before and after eating to prevent possible exposure to allergens.

For additional information, please check out the Food and Allergy Research and Education site (F.A.R.E at http://www.foodallergy.org/home) and check out their Allergy Awareness month newsletter:  http://www.foodallergy.org/document.doc?id=384

Tactical Urbanism in Menlo Park
May 17, Sunday, 1-2pm, at the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center's Cypress Room
Wouldn't be nice to be able to get to school and around town by foot or bike? It's a great idea, but our current streets don't always make it easy. Join us for an exciting talk by Julie Flynn of The Street Plans Collaborative and learn about "tactical urbanism"- a city and citizen-led approach to neighborhood building using short-term, low-cost interventions to catalyze long-term changes. Flynn recently helped Morgan Hill pilot-test a protected bicycle lane through the town's commercial center. She will share information about this project, as well as other success stories, to provide ideas for what we can do here in Menlo Park. Your RSVP to lydiawlee@gmail.com is appreciated, but not necessary to attend.
