From the Principal

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

Last week I was giving a short tour to a family who recently moved to Las Lomitas. As we crossed the playground, I told them about our Peaceful Playground templates on the blacktop and the various options students have for recess play. Later I reflected on how important it is for students to be able to independently engage in appropriate play. I've shared the following in past years, and still find it pertinent today. The Elementary School Parents Newsletter (November 2010) urges parents to encourage children to engage in creative, imaginative play, free of media, that you can facilitate at home. Here are some suggestions:

  • Bake something together: Bake cookies and take some to a neighbor or an older relative.
  • Tell stories: Tell your child a true story about a time when you made a mistake - the more hilarious the better! Share stories of when your family over-came challenges or hardships.
  • Play catch: Even if you can't get outside, toss a beanbag or a soft ball. If you can go to a park, try kicking a ball as well as tossing it.
  • Collect objects from nature: Leaves can be gathered, placed between paper towels and pressed with a heavy book to preserve. Rocks, sticks, seed pods are also very entertaining. Find a box to decorate and carefully store these treasures.
  • Sing: Start with old favorites like "Row, row, row your boat." Sing songs you remember from you childhood. Let your child sing songs to you that were learned in music class with Mrs. Lampert. Make your own instruments using items you find around the house.
  • Read aloud: Children never tire of being read to. Take turns and let others in the family do the reading.

As we head toward Spring Break, think about opportunities to engage in this type of free exploration. Whatever you do, the important thing is to take time to be with your child without the day-to-day distractions and constant media blitz. Time is a gift you can freely give all year long.

Until next time,

Sue Sartor

Principal
