Dear Las Lomitas Families, Fall is in the air, which means that Halloween is not far behind. I'd like to share our plans and how you can help make this a safe, special day for children. The students love to dress up in a variety of costumes, parade at school and then take to the streets, knocking on doors in search of special treats. On Friday, October 31, we will have our Halloween parade at 10:45 a.m. on the blacktop. We ask that children not wear masks (they impede vision), bring weapons or wear blood as any part of their costume. Children will be seated in a large oval on the blacktop with their class. Three to four classes will parade at a time so all can see and be seen. We ask that parents stand outside the oval. Please do not wear masks. I want you to understand the school's policy regarding photographs. At any school event, you should only take photos of your own child. No photos of children other than your own may be shared over the internet, either by email or posted on websites. Posting photographs of children other than your own on photo-share sites such as Shutterfly or social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube is not allowed. Some families have specifically asked that their child's photo not be distributed in any way other than in the classroom. It is our legal responsibility to honor this request. We ask you, too, to please not send candy to school for snack or lunchtime. With your support and cooperation, I'm sure we'll have another safe and colorful Halloween at Las Lomitas. Until next time, Sue Sartor, Principal MINIMUM DAY INFORMATION We will be on a minimum day schedule November 10, 12, 13, and 14. All students will arrive at 9:00 and be dismissed at 12:20. To minimize the chaos this creates please note: Flagpole Pick-up - All students will wait in designated locations by grade.
- Drivers must stay in their car and pull through the pick-up lane.
- Display name cards in the window.
- Leave dogs at home.
- Bicyclists must walk bikes until you are away from the front gate area.
- Traffic and parking enforcement will be present. Park in designated locations only.
Bus Riders - Students may not ride home on the bus for a play date during minimum days. Only regular riders may ride. We are at capacity. Pick up play dates at the flag pole.
- If students go to the bus for a play date, we will bring both students (regular rider and guest) to the office for pick up.
- Buses may be a bit late as it takes longer to load and unload on minimum days.

The Apple for the Classroom program is a way for parents to support their children's teachers directly. All the teachers and specialists at Las Lomitas have been invited to create a "wish list" of items that would help to further enrich their classrooms. Wishes may include art supplies, gift cards, books, or donations toward a special activity or field trip. To view the lists, please visit our website at http://www.laslomitaspta.org/programs/apple Once at the site, select the list you want to view. Teachers' lists are divided into two sections, so you can choose to bring an item directly to the classroom or you can choose to make a donation via PayPal. Thank you for supporting our teachers and enriching your children's experience at Las Lomitas.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
We need more volunteers to assist at lunch! Recology, our waste hauler, will not haul our compost waste unless it is properly sorted. If we do not comply with their regulations, we will be forced to lose our impeccable TRASH FREE reputation. Please join in the fun (yes, sorting trash with your kids!) to help Mrs. Sartor and Mr. Camou with the small children at lunch time.
For parents who send lunch to school, please use washable containers for your children's lunch. We maintain zero trash lunches. Leftover food is to be taken home. Disposable containers will be sent home.
We are so grateful to keep the Hot Lunch program going, BUT let's not let our composting efforts go to waste. Let's keep our reputation intact and continue to be a model for all other schools in the area. Yes, we need you to help with TRASH!

Halloween Costume Drive - Give Families in Need a Special Treat
Please help the families of Haven House Family Shelter have a great Halloween by donating new or gently used costumes in all sizes (infant through adult). The Girl Scout troops of Las Lomitas and La Entrada are working together with Suzanne Mitchell (La Entrada Technology Director) to collect costumes at both schools. Look for the bins and Girl Scouts during morning drop off the weeks of October 6th and October 13th at Las Lomitas and the week of October 6th at La Entrada. No need to even get out of your car, we will take the costumes to the bin for you! (The bins will be out at both schools until 10/17.)
Haven House, part of Innvision/Shelter Network, offers emergency and transitional housing for homeless families. Each night almost 100 kids (infants to teens) call the shelter home while their parents are working to move them back to permanent housing. Your donation of Halloween costumes will ensure that these families can participate in the fun of the season at a very difficult time in their lives!

Art Notecards
|
ART NOTECARDS ORDER FORMS & COMMUNITY SERVICE LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN Each year Las Lomitas and La Entrada participate in a PTA Fundraiser for the Arts in our schools. Notecards are made from your children's drawings which were completed during the month of September. Funds from the sale of these notecards are used by classrooms for field trips, visiting artists, musicians, speakers, art supplies and literature about the arts. The notecards make terrific gifts for friends and families, thank you notes, and enclosure cards for birthdays. The printed notecards (with matching envelopes) will be delivered to the classrooms Friday, November 21. This year we will also be facilitating a Community Service Letter Writing Project benefiting the Ronald McDonald House. Children will be asked to donate one of their notecards to write a message to incoming families seeking treatment for their terminally ill children. Teachers will facilitate this activity and the notes delivered to the Ronald McDonald House during the holidays. Generic notecards will also be provided so that all children who wish to participate may do so. Order forms will be distributed next week and must be returned to the box in the school office no later than the end of the day on Friday, October 24th. PayPal & Checks will be accepted for purchases and the order form MUST BE SUBMITTED with each order. Unfortunately, late orders cannot be accepted due to the early release for Thanksgiving. Questions? Please contact Molly Drewes (molly@drewes.net) Tissha Brumm (tsbrumm@gmail.com), or Laurel O'Neill (ltimpson2008@gmail.com). |

Basketball Season and Registration Registration for the LLL Basketball Season opened Sunday, October 12th at 8:00 a.m.! This is a very popular winter sport that is open to all students in 3rd through 8th grade. Register early before divisions are full. Registration closes at midnight on Saturday, October 25th.
NEW THIS YEAR: we will register 8-10 players per team. Once a division is full (based on number of coaches), we will start a wait-list and only add more players if we get more coaches to form another team. Register early and volunteer to coach!
Evaluations are the first weekend in November and coaches announce their teams a week later. Practices begin in mid-November, games begin in early December and the season ends in early March. Division coordinators will contact parents with more information towards the end of the month. Additional information about the basketball program can be found on our website http://laslomitasleague.com/.
Coaches Wanted! We are a parent-run basketball league and we need coaches.
You do not need a lot of experience to coach; we can pair you with a more experienced coach. We also provide an excellent coaching clinic. Please contact Sue Bartalo or Kathleen Liston if you are interested in coaching.
Mark your calendars for the following dates:
- Wed, Oct. 29th at 6:30pm: Mandatory Coaches Meeting (and fingerprinting of new coaches) in the La Entrada library. We will choose practice times and review rules, expectations, evaluations, etc. Practice times are selected based on coach availability and a lottery system.
- Nov. 1st& 2nd (Sat/Sun): Player Evaluation Days (schedule to be determined). Evaluations are used strictly to divide each grade level into fair and balanced teams. Your child's grade/division will be assigned a specific day and time closer to the date. Please check back here or on the LLL Basketball webpage in late October.
Join the LLL Board of Directors!
Join the team that provides enriching and fun after-school activities and sports for Las Lomitas and La Entrada students! The Las Lomitas League (LLL) is a parent-led, non-profit organization and we are expanding our board of directors. We have the following open positions:
- President-in-training - Shadow the current president and learn about the programs and responsibilities of the LLL President. Lead the board beginning in June 2015.
- Basketball Co-Director (in-training) - Work with the current director to learn about our successful recreational basketball program. Co-lead the program in 2015-2016.
- Secretary - Take minutes at board meetings. Maintain records of board policies, actions, etc. Edit LLL articles for Spot/Roar newsletters.
- Member-at-Large - Join the LLL board to learn about our programs and help in small ways. We would like an at-large member from each school.
