Note from the Principal

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! I look forward to seeing all of you and your smiling children! It's been awfully quiet around here!

Before you arrive, please keep in mind that:

  • We will be on a 9:00-2:05 dismissal for all 1st-3rd grade students the first two days of school, so it will be very crowded. I thank you in advance for being patient and cautious when you come to pick up your child. Kindergartners will attend 9:00-12:20.
  • Hot Food for 1st-3rd grades starts on August 27th. Everyone needs to bring a lunch the first four days of school. I encourage you to use reusable containers. Students will be asked to take all plastic bags and wrappers, as well as uneaten food, home with them each day. Hopefully, this will not only help the environment, but you will know exactly what your child is eating at lunch each day and can make adjustments if needed.
  • The PTA Welcome Back Volunteer Fair is at 9:00 in Cano Hall on the first day of school. Everyone is encouraged to come, mingle and see what might be a good way for you to support our educational and enrichment programs. I hope to see you there!

Until next time,

Sue Sartor
Principal

PTA News

Las Lomitas PTA

Welcome back to the 2014-15 School year! We are thrilled to be heading back to school, and so are our kids. We hope you have all enjoyed your summer break, and are ready to be back in the school routine!

Please mark your calendars for the important upcoming dates listed above.

We are especially looking forward to seeing you at our Welcome Coffee & Volunteer Fair in Cano Hall on the first day of school from 9:00-10:30am.Join us to meet old and new friends for a cup of coffee as we learn about all the new things we will be doing this year!

Volunteering at school allows you to interact with students, staff, and families.  There are volunteer options for everyone - you can choose to volunteer weekly, 1 or 2 days during the year, in the classroom, or from home!  Joining will be quick and easy with our mobile app. If you cannot join us in person at this meeting, we still would love to have you volunteer! Just go online using the PTA link below:

http://www.laslomitaspta.org/volunteer/index.htm

As most of you know, InfoSnap registration has begun and today is your last chance to go online to register for this year. As you may have noticed, there was an easier way to support the PTA by signing up through InfoSnap. We hope many of you have appreciated the ease of the registration process, including signing up to support the Las Lomitas PTA, and indicate your interest in volunteering for any of your favorite programs. If you didn't finalize your membership with the PTA, you may do so by bringing in your check for $100 per child (this will include a directory) to the office. Or if you prefer to donate online, feel free to use the link below:

http://www.laslomitaspta.org/membership/index.htm

Please also plan to visit the new and improved Las Lomitas School website at http://ll-llesd-ca.schoolloop.com. It is here that you can download or sync the school wide calendar to your calendar so you don't miss any events or other school related activities.

Finally, a big thank you to all the past and future PTA volunteers and for those of you not yet signed up to volunteer, please do so! It helps all of our school programs immensely, not to mention shows your children that you have a vested interest in their school. This means more than one might think.

We look forward to seeing you all around, and if you have any questions, thoughts or suggestions, please email us at president@llpta.org.

Sincerely,

Artis Montague & Helen Ungerman

P.S. Show your school spirit every Friday! Wear red or get your Las Lomitas Spirit Wear at www.cafepress.com/laslomitaselementary. Also look for the Spirit Wear table at upcoming events.

Las Lomitas Hot Lunch Program
The Las Lomitas Hot Lunch Program begins Wednesday, August 27th. Hot lunch is available for children in grades 1-3, Kindergartners do not participate in the hot lunch program.

Choicelunch Choicelunch will continue to provide our hot lunch program. They offer a larger variety of healthy, daily entrees, flexibility with scheduling, sustainable ingredients as well as compostable packaging.

If your family had a Choicelunch account last year, you do not need to re-register; your child or children will automatically be moved up a grade and placed in the proper class. If you would like to add a student to your account, make changes to your existing information, or create a new account, please visit www.choicelunch.com. If needed, the Las Lomitas Registration code is "Atherton".

Volunteering to serve hot lunch is an excellent way to be involved with the PTA, see your children at lunch time, have a great time with friends and get to know other parents! We are in need of volunteers every day, especially Wednesday and Thursday, so if you can help for 1 hour once per week or every other week from approximately 11:40-12:45, please contact Heather Caelius at hotlunch@llpta.org.

For more information about the Hot Lunch program please visit www.choicelunch.com, or email Heather Caelius at hotlunch@llpta.org.

Ensuring Excellence in Education for 30 Years

Congratulations, We Did It Again!

Once again, our fabulous community showed its dedication to a superior education for our children.  Thanks to your generous contributions, LLEF was able to gift $2.4 million dollars to our school district in June for use this upcoming 2014-15 year. This gift represents 11% of the District's operating budget, constituting the second largest source of funding for our schools.

These essential funds will be used for:

  • Maintaining Small Class Sizes
  • Enhanced Curriculum- including PE, art, music, science, language, and electives
  • Excellence in Education initiatives- including professional development for teachers, technology in the classrooms, piloting innovative STEAM programs
As the Foundation begins its 30th year, we can reflect on the great achievements of the dedicated parents who preceded us. We feel inspired to continue their remarkable efforts raising funds for our children and our schools.

Thanks again for your perennial support.  Welcome back to school!

Nice Lice Advice - 75% of the mothers who bring their children into Honeycombers also have lice.  My four daughters had lice twice, but I never got them, even though the girls were sleeping with me from time to time and we snuggled at bedtime.  We've asked our customers and it seems like the most likely culprit in those cases where the mom gets lice is sharing combs or brushes.  It seems so easy to just grab your brush from your purse and run it through your little one's head... but try to resist the urge.  Keep your brush, comb and hair accessories high up out of children's reach, and invest in a brush for each child.  Even if lice does come into your life, hopefully it will skip you.  Brought to you by Honeycombers Lice Advice & Treatment Salon in downtown Menlo Park.  Come by to purchase all-natural lice prevention and treatment products to treat your children for lice yourself at home.  Or call 1.888.863.2005 to book an appointment to have your children checked, and if needed, treated for lice by our friendly Combers.  We offer appointments 7 days a week in our bright, clean salon or in the privacy of your own home.   Honeycombers - The Sweetest Way to be Treated
