Together We Did It!

togetherLLEF

Dear District Families,

Thank you  for making this the best fundraising year in the Foundation's history!  Because of your generosity and your commitment to excellence in education, we have raised the most money ever for our schools for excellence and innovation. Your terrific response has helped us raise just over $3 Million this year, including our auction costs.  This is a huge milestone for us as a community, and just goes to prove that we can make anything happen if we put our minds and hearts to it.

I am so honored and proud to have been the President of the Foundation this year. Thank you, again, for making it a fabulous and fun year.

I also want to thank the most amazing Foundation team that I have had by my side. Without them, none of our success would have been possible. They worked tireless, long hours with tremendous passion, energy and conviction.  Thank you dear Foundation!

With deepest gratitude,

Komal Shah

Foundation President 2012-13

The Cano Award: A Las Lomitas Tradition

Manuel Cano epitomized the hardy immigrant spirit that has made the United States great. His indomitable spirit, strong work ethic and deep-seated faith overcame great personal adversity allowing him to become a contributing member of society and friend and mentor to those around him.

Born in Guanajuato, Mexico in 1901, Mr. Cano had no schooling and spent his early youth helping his parents with their small farm and drayage company. At the age of 13, he was "inducted" into the Revolution. He fought in numerous campaigns, sometimes with Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata, at other times against. Mr. Cano taught himself to read and write in Spanish while in the service.

Mr. Cano immigrated to the U.S. during the latter part of the 1920's. He settled in Monterey, married and began raising three children. During this time he worked in Monterey's Cannery Row and as a greens keeper for Cypress Point Golf Course. Tragically, he lost his wife and one son to illness and accident.

In 1940 he married again and settled in Richmond working at the Naval Shipyards. He began teaching himself to read and write English. After the war he moved to San Francisco and then to Redwood City. In 1950 he came to work for Las Lomitas School District as a custodian.

For 20 years, Mr. Cano worked 15-hour days; working the mornings at Menlo Country Club as a caddy, and afternoons/evenings at Las Lomitas as a custodian. During this time he applied for and received his U.S. Citizenship. He was proud of his U.S. citizenship and his ability to successfully provide for his family and his children's education, and to live the America dream of owning his own home.

After retiring in 1970 from Las Lomitas, a hall was built and named in honor of Mr. Cano for his years of dedication to the school and for the attributes - commitment, honor, integrity, perseverance and kindness - that he displayed in his daily life. Mr. Cano passed away on April 13, 1996, but Cano Hall stands as a testament to his impact on our lives.

For the past 10 years, Mr. Cano's sons, Herb and Sam, have provided a gift to the school in memory of their father. They still own the family home, and use some of the income generated from renting it for the gift. Each year, 8-10 third grade students are selected by their teachers to receive a backpack full of instructional supplies to take with them to La Entrada. These students are selected due to their hard work ethic, perseverance and kindness in spite of having fewer resources than many others at the school. Sam and Herb come each June to meet the children, tell them about their father and distribute the backpacks. This tradition exemplifies the values we have at Las Lomitas and the community's commitment to support our students. I am very proud to be part of this generous community.

New Online Registration for 2013-2014 Returning Students
New Online Registration for 2013-2014 Returning Students

Las Lomitas Elementary School District is excited to announce an online student data validation and registration system for the upcoming school year, called InfoSnap. The system is a secure and green process, which allows the district to verify all student demographic, emergency and medical information for your child prior to the start of the new school year. The system will also allow you to electronically sign the annual permission forms for school district policies.

In short, this online process:

  • Replaces the annual Student Emergency Card updates
  • Replaces most the hard copy student registration needs, there will still be a need to print and return some forms
  • Offers online permission forms that your child typically brings home on the first day of school, many of which you can now "digitally" approve, and;
  • Offers you the ability to update or change any of your family or student information at anytime!

By early August, you will receive a letter with instructions on how to access the system for your children. The email will contain a link/instructions and a secure "snapcode" that links directly to your student's information. You will create an account, that you will use each year for this process, and submit a form for each student in your family. To make the process easier for families with multiple students, you will have the option to copy all generic family information to all other students in your family.

We need all returning families to complete these forms before the start of school. If you do not have access to the Internet, please contact the school and you can make an appointment to use a school computer in the library.  Again, you don't need to do anything right now. Look for our letter with instructions in early August.  If you have any further questions, please contact Suzanne Mitchell, 650-854-3962 x199 or email smitchell@llesd.org.  Thank you.
