From the Principal |
Dear Las Lomitas Families, Four years ago, we initiated a composting and recycling program at lunch that has resulted in a reduction of seven bags per day that would otherwise go into landfill. This is a tremendous accomplishment! During Earth Week last April, our Green Team parents helped students made an effort to have trash-free lunches. Any items that were not compostible or recyclable went back home in lunchboxes. This was also a huge success! The number of plastic bags and wrappers decreased over the course of the week. Students learned that they can truly make a difference in the world by making ecological choices. Next year we are going to strive to reduce trash all the time, not just during Earth Week. Choice Lunches will be almost 100% compostible. For those who bring lunches, food should be packed in reusable containers. During the first few weeks of school, we will continue sorting and composting as usual, and encourage the reduction of plastic bags. Our goal is to be plastic bag-free by the end of September! Plastic bags have been banned in many local municipalities in recent months. Eliminating plastic bags in lunches at Las Lomitas will not only help the environment, but will minimize the effort to sort compost and trash at the end of each lunch period. I hope you will embrace this new step we are taking to reduce our impact on the environment. Over the summer, keep your eye out for reusable lunchbox containers! Sue Sartor Principal |

Current 3rd Grade Parents - Volunteer at La Entrada Next Fall! 2013-2014 Committee Chairs - Plan Ahead for Fall by Signing Up Now! We are now recruiting our Committee Chairs for 2013-2014. We still need a few more hands on deck, One or two people can lead any of the open committees: Halloween Event, Geo Bee, Science Fair, Lunchtime Enrichment, Tutoring Center. All of the open positions are low to moderate time commitments. Take a look at the job descriptions on our website. Please consider joining us! Contact MJ Crousore at mjcrousore@gmail.com with any questions or to sign up now. Hot Lunch Day Chairs Needed for 2013-2014 - Tuesday is covered! Hot lunch service starts Wednesday, August 28. We cannot serve hot lunch without volunteers. Your help is needed so we don't have to limit the number of days we serve hot lunch at La Entrada. We're planning ahead and need one parent to chair each day of hot lunch (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday), for either the 4th and 5th grade and/or the 6th - 8th grade lunch period. In other words, eight time slots are open...you can choose one or more! D ay Chairing is not a difficult job. It involves organizing your group of volunteers (we recruit the volunteers for you!) and communicating the schedule to them along with any needs/issues regarding our provider, Choice Lunch and to Julia Massa, our Hot Lunch Chair. It's easy to learn and it is one of the most important volunteer positions we have as it is very difficult to run hot lunch service without a Day Chair. If your child orders hot lunch, or if you would like to get a glimpse into the La Entrada social scene, please consider chairing. Email Julia if you have any questions or if you're willing and able at gershenberg@gmail.com.
