From the Principal

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

Last week I was giving a short tour to a family who recently moved to Las Lomitas. As we crossed the playground, I told them about our Peaceful Playground templates on the blacktop and the various options students have for recess play. Later I reflected on how important it is for students to be able to independently engage in appropriate play.  The Elementary School Parents Newsletter (November 2010) urges parents to encourage children to engage in creative, imaginative play, free of media, that you can facilitate at home. Here are some suggestions:
  • Bake something together: Bake cookies and take some to a neighbor or an older relative.
  • Tell stories: Tell your child a true story about a time when you made a mistake - the more hilarious the better! Share stories of when your family over-came challenges or hardships.
  • Play catch: Even if you can't get outside, toss a beanbag or a soft ball. If you can go to a park, try kicking a ball as well as tossing it.
  • Collect objects from nature: Leaves can be gathered, placed between paper towels and pressed with a heavy book to preserve. Rocks, sticks, seed pods are also very entertaining. Find a box to decorate and carefully store these treasures.
  • Sing: Start with old favorites like "Row, row, row your boat." Sing songs you remember from you childhood. Let your child sing songs to you that were learned in music class with Mrs. Lampert. Make your own instruments using items you find around the house.
  • Read aloud: Children never tire of being read to. Take turns and let others in the family do the reading.

Whatever you do, the important thing is to take time to be with your child without the day-to-day distractions and contestant media blitz. Time is a gift you can freely give all year long.

Until next time,

Sue Sartor

Principal

THANK YOU FROM THE LAS LOMITAS AUCTION TEAM - EVERYONE IS A WINNER!

The Las Vegas Auction was sensational!  We cannot give enough thanks or recognition to all of the supporters who participated in the Las Vegas revelry. We deeply appreciate all of the parents, teachers and staff who solicited, donated and bid on items in our online, silent and live auctions. You are the people who make our district such a special place to live and learn!

We are still tabulating the funds raised from the auction and will report back next week with the results. Stay tuned! Let's hear it for the 2013 Las Vegas Auction Committee!

It is not too late to donate to our Fund-A-Need campaign!

FundANeed Our Fund-A-Need this year is to outfit a media lab at La Entrada and an iPad cart at Las Lomitas to promote digital literacy.  The media lab will be designed to inspire learning, creativity, and critical thinking through experimentation with digital and traditional media.  Students will have access to new electives like Digital Animation and Digital Photography, as well as have enriched core courses.  At Las Lomitas, the iPad cart will give young learners access to a variety of educational content through a new medium.  Fundamentally, your support of Fund-A-Need will help prepare our students for high school, college, careers and beyond.  Please invest in technology resources for our children's campuses-donate here.
School News

Members of Las Lomitas Brownie troop #61718 have been diligently working since the fall of 2012 to learn what they could about the homeless.  After several months of learning and votes, the girls are looking forward to hosting a pizza and craft party with the children of Haven House at the end of the month and will be organizing a collection of new and used pajamas and books.   The girls will be using a portion of their "cookie sales" to pay for the pizza and craft but they need your help too.  Please consider donating new and used pajamas and books for the children of Haven House.  A box for the collection will be near the flag pole from May 15- 22.   If you have any questions please feel free to contact Anna Plume at [email protected]

Current 3rd Grade Parents - Volunteer at La Entrada Next Fall!

2013-2014 Committee Chairs - Plan Ahead for Fall by Signing Up Now!

We are now recruiting our Committee Chairs for 2013-2014.  We still need a few more hands on deck,  One or two people can lead any of the open committees: Halloween Event, Geo Bee, Science Fair, Lunchtime Enrichment, Tutoring Center.  All of the open positions are low to moderate time commitments. (Very manageable!)  Take a look at the job descriptions on our website.  Please consider joining us!  Contact MJ Crousore at [email protected] with any questions or to sign up now.

Hot Lunch Day Chairs Needed for 2013-2014 - Tuesday is covered!
Hot lunch service starts Wednesday, August 28.  We cannot serve hot lunch without volunteers.  Your help is needed so we don't have to limit the number of days we serve hot lunch at La Entrada.  We're planning ahead and need one parent to chair each day of hot lunch (Mondays through Fridays), for either the 4th and 5th grade and/or the 6th - 8th grade lunch period.  In other words, eight time slots are open...you can choose one or more!  Day Chairing is not a difficult job. It involves organizing your group of volunteers (we recruit the volunteers for you!)  and communicating the schedule to them along with any needs/issues regarding our provider, Choice Lunch and to Julia Massa, our Hot Lunch Chair.  It's easy to learn and it is one of the most important volunteer positions we have as it is very difficult to run hot lunch service without a Day Chair.  If your child orders hot lunch, or if you would like to get a glimpse into the La Entrada social scene, please consider chairing.  Email Julia if you have any questions or if you're willing and able at [email protected].
