What does  your child "wonder"?  It's time for Science Wonders!

Science Wonders is the Las Lomitas version of a Science Fair. The completely voluntary, non-competitive event is open to any Las Lomitas student. To participate, students should think of a question (I wonder...), look for an answer by experimenting or researching (I did...), and create a display with their findings (I learned...) to share with their friends and families.

The displays will be presented in Cano Hall on Wednesday, March 20 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. More information and a guide can be found here.

If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer, please contact Diana Sunshine (sunshine@onderdonk.net)

From the Superintendent's Office

We are currently making plans for the 2013-14 school year and a part of the planning includes staffing, facilities and educational programs.  In order to do the very best job we can, we need every family to complete the 2013-2014 Enrollment Planning Survey, available from this link (or http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DFQXLDS),by March 11.  (Note: graduating 8th graders do not need to be included).

Thank you in advance for your time.
From the Principal

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

March is here! There is a lot going on this month, so be sure to keep up by reading the Lion's Roar
and classroom newsletters.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are March 13-15. This is an opportunity to have meaningful conversation about your child and discuss goals and expectations with the teacher.

Science Wonders is March 20th, but you should start thinking about this now. I especially like this event as it allows our students to engage in "wondering why." I always enjoy discovering what has captured the children's interest and the processes they use to answer the "why?" For those of you with children who are particularly interested in science, I recommend you explore the California Science Teachers Association website for information about Family Science Nights. This site provides plenty of examples of hands-on science activities that families can do together. It may be a great way to spend some time "wondering" together!

Along that same line, our Science Resource Room is up and running! Three first grade classes used the science room last week for lessons presented by the Lawrence Hall of Science. We have new moveable science tables, chairs, Smartboard, projector, computer, and document camera set up and ready to go. The members of our Science Work Group purchased posters and book display racks. They also organized the materials and put up bulletin boards. We will be adding materials, books and equipment as the room gets more use. Field trips and guest speakers and assemblies are also available for teachers using the SEERI funds. These funds are the result of the Fund-a-Need gift from last year's Foundation Auction. Thanks to your generosity, our students have a new learning environment to explore!

I enjoyed seeing so many of you at the PTA General Membership meeting. Kathy Ruwe presented information about Second Step, our social skills program. We appreciated hearing your questions and will post information for parents about the program in a future Lion's Roar.

At the PTA meeting we also discussed our placement process. Please note, if you have important information you want to be considered about your child's placement for next year, please send the teacher or me an email before May 1st. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

Until next time,

Sue Sartor

Principal

Welcome New Faculty!

Two of our teachers left after the Presidents' Week break on personal leave for the remainder of the school year. Becky Grant will be filling in for Trisha Nettles in the 2/3 multi-grade. Becky comes to us with 10 years of teaching experience, most of it at 2nd and 3rd grades.  Prior to Las Lomitas, she taught in San Diego and several years in the United Kingdom. Becky is fluent in Spanish and a classical pianist. We are thrilled to have her with us!

Becca Garcia will be stepping in for Joy Iwanaga in kindergarten. Becca is a familiar face here at Las Lomitas. She will job-share with Stephanie Dent, with whom she taught with a few years ago while on a long-term assignment for Mrs. Chin. She taught in our Language Lab and has substituted extensively in our classrooms at all grade levels. Becca lives in our community and her children attend(ed) Las Lomitas schools. We feel fortunate to have her as part of our faculty.
