From the Principal

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

As you know, our enrollment is near 680 students. If we add in faculty, staff, students and parents, Las Lomitas' population is about the same size as Belvedere, California! In order to function smoothly, we all need to do our part. Below is a list of ways you can make life here a little bit less hectic for everyone:

  1. Read the Lion's Roar It has the answer to almost every question you may have.
  2. Keep track of the school calendar.  It has the answer to questions about minimum days, vacations, and conference dates.
  3. Call in absences early in the morning.  This will reduce the number of follow up calls the secretaries must make in order to ensure your child is safe.
  4. Provide written notes to the teacher if dismissal plans change This reduces the number of last minute phone calls and the need to interrupt the classroom to pass this vital information on to the teacher.
  5. Return requested forms on time.  This reduces the number of repeated mailings we must make to ensure we have emergence information, medical permissions, etc. on file for your child.
  6. Park in designated places This will keep us from having to make an announcement over the intercom and interrupt classroom learning.
  7. Drop your child off on time Students should not arrive before 8:30 a.m.  We do not have supervision prior to 8:30 a.m.
  8. Pick your child up on time.  The office closes at 4:00.  We cannot provide supervision after hours.
  9. Be at the bus stop on time.  This will reduce the need for you to come to the school to pick up your child.
  10. Keep track of after-school program changes.  There are multiple Las Lomitas League classes.  Keep that LLL teacher's number handy and call him/her to find out if there is a change in schedule.
  11. Be patient We care about each child, parent and teacher at this school but cannot give all of you our attention at the same time.

Last year we remodeled the office to provide an area specifically for parent information. There you will find calendars, LLEF information, bus schedules, Board minutes, enrichment programs fliers, mail to parents from teachers, PTA files, etc. all in one location. Our hope is to be able to provide a "one stop shopping" area for parents. As always, Monica and Carol are happy to assist you if you can't find what you need. With everyone's cooperation, our little "town" will function smoothly. Thanks for your support!

Until next time,

Sue Sartor

Principal

Why Should I Donate to the Read-A-Thon?
Our annual Read-A-Thon is the PTA's primary fundraising activity. Your donations are combined with our PTA membership income to fund wonderful programs for the kids, such as:

- Principal's Book Club (ask your child if they have a favorite)
- Lunch Table Sun Covers (many need to be replaced each year)
- Playground structures with adoption of the Peaceful Playground program
- Quality Sound System for school events
- Teacher Professional Development (critical to successfully adopting Common Core Standards)
- And so much more!

We are truly grateful for all donations received for the kids! --Thank you!

Please record your child(ren)'s minutes online here or turn in your red envelope with the Read-A-Thon brochure and checks as soon as possible so we can finalize our numbers to share after ski week.

We will have the Popcorn Celebration this Friday! This will be a school-wide celebration as all grades have met their goal! Please contact Cheryl Cho-Phan at cchophan@gmail.com if you would like to help with handing out popcorn to all of our readers! Also, stop by and see the Read-A-Thon banner outside Cano Hall overflowing with popcorn kernels awarded to our Milestone Minute readers!

Box Tops for Education
boxtops
It's time to start collecting and submitting box tops.   We will be having a drawing at the end of February for those that have submitted box tops. If you haven't already, please submit your box tops in a small plastic bag  to the office with your student's name and room number on it.. (There is a cereal box attached to the side of the counter across from the lost and found).   We will have a drawing on February 26th so please turn them in before then.    Don't forget that your everyday online purchases can also help Las Lomitas. Visit the box top web page and designate Las Lomitas as the school you wish to support. Then, every time you shop online, as long as you enter through the Box Tops web page, a percentage of your purchase will be credited to our school.

Thank you!

Kindergarten Registration and Placement for 2013-2014

If you have important information you would like to share about your child's placement for next year, please let the teacher know or send a letter to Principal Sartor by May 1st.  Letters after that date may not be considered.

Please complete Kindergarten registrations as soon as possible so we can plan staffing for next year.  Ladera residents must have their registrations in by May 1st to guarantee a first session placement.
Safety Tip

Always load students into cars on the curbside. It is dangerous for the children to enter the drive through lane.  It also slows the queue.  Thank you for your cooperation.
School News

From the Nurse
Respiratory viruses are widely circulating in our county now, with both children and adults being affected. To minimize the spread of illness, please keep sick children home from school and encourage the practice of frequent hand washing and respiratory etiquette.

The CDC recommends the following with regard to exclusion of ill persons in school settings: "Those who get flu-like symptoms at school should go home and stay home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medicine."

Thank you for your assistance with minimizing illness, check here for further information about managing the flu.

Disabled Parking Spaces
Designated disabled parking spaces are to be used ONLY by those with a disabled parking placard.  No exceptions!  Even if you are only stopping for a couple of minutes to run into the office, you are to park in designated parking spaces.  You may be cited if you violate this law.  We do have disabled members in our community that rely on those spaces being available.  Thank you for your cooperation.

District Directory Corrections and Additions
The Las Lomitas and La Entrada PTA are in the process of publishing a district directory addendum. If your info is either missing or incorrect in the district directory please follow these steps to have it corrected/added:
  •  Stop at the school office to check that the school has your correct records;
  •  Email any addition or correction to directory@laentradapta.org by Friday, February 8th.

As a reminder, a student directory is provided for all Las Lomitas Elementary School District families by the PTAs and the cost is $7.50 per directory.

Important notes:

1. If your child is attending CCLC, please remember to inform CCLC of the LLL classes your child are registered for and the details of the LLL class (e.g. day/time/venue, start/end date and no-class dates). If you have not done so, please do so immediately to ensure your child does not miss any LLL classes.

2. We have been informed that CCLC will no longer escort students to and from LLL classes. Children will have to walk to their LLL classes and back to CCLC on their own.

If you have any questions on any of the above procedures, please contact the Director of CCLC, Mr Garrett Lamb directly at GLamb@cclc.com

Steve and Kate's Camp: Join us this summer!  Steve and Kate's Camp is a summer day camp, founded in 1980, for campers entering grades K-7 in the fall.  Instead of a rigid structure, we give campers choices.  Instead of teaching kids the typical way, we give them tools and gentle guidance to help them become autodidacts.  The difference is subtle -- and it's profound. We have 24 sites in the Bay Area (including Palo Alto) plus sites in Southern California, Chicago and Seattle.  Liberate yourself from weekly sessions.  You are free to attend any number of days, anytime from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at any location.  Any unused days are refunded automatically.  How is that for peace of mind?  Namaste. Questions? Contact Elizabeth Youngblood; paloalto@steveandkate.com
