School News

Dear Las Lomitas families,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful Thanksgiving vacation. It will be very busy around here these next few weeks as we head for the winter break.

Parents are very important members of our school community. Parent representatives serve on several district and site committees including the English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC), Strategic Plan Collaborative Team and School Site Council (SSC). The Las Lomitas representatives are Daniel Li, Ingrid Abild-Pedersen and Tatiana Morante. Strategic Plan parent representatives are Molly Glennen and Artis Montegue. Parents serving on our SSC are Rebecca Deutscher, Eric Ver Ploeg, Artis Montegue, and Andrea Turner. Laurie Sobel will be joining the Site Council to replace Bill Steinmetz who is beginning his term on the School Board. A hearty thank you goes out to these parents who dedicate their precious time to learn more about our programs and the state and federal requirements that must be monitored. Their thoughts and feedback are integral to our school's success.

We will have a full earthquake drill on November 26th (weather permitting). We will drop, cover and evacuate to the field. Once there, we will complete a full emergency simulation including search and rescue, minor injuries and releasing students to parents. This is a good opportunity to take some time with your child to discuss your family's plan should there be an earthquake during school hours. Page 135 in the school directory/handbook provides information about emergency planning for parents. I encourage you to read this and keep the information handy. Finally, be sure that the names and phone numbers on your child's emergency card are current. This is the information we use to release your child during an emergency.

It's hard to believe, but we are gearing up for next year's kindergarten registration! Tours will begin in December and registration on January 28, 2013. Please be sure to read the details about the kindergarten registration and session request process in the article below. If you know of any families with incoming kindergarteners, please be sure to share the information with them.

Finally, I've received a few inquiries from current families regarding requests for session changes. Please see the information in the article in today's Roar about returning students who will enter first or second grade next year for details. This process is different than for those entering kindergarten or for new students.

Until next time,

Sue Sartor

Kindergarten Registration and Kindergarten Session Request Information

LAS LOMITAS SCHOOL DISTRICT KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Kindergarten registration packets for children who will turn age five on or before October 1, 2013 will be available at the Las Lomitas School office beginning Monday, January 7, 2013. Registration packets for 1st through 3rd grades for the 2013-2014 school year will also be available starting this day in the office, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m, Monday through Friday. Completed registration packets will ONLY be accepted for enrollment starting January 28, 2013 at 8:00 a.m. Your registration packet will be date and time stamped upon receipt when all required paperwork is complete.

If you are registering a child for Kindergarten, please bring the ORIGINAL birth certificate or passport, your child's immunization records to date, and proof of residence in the form of two ORIGINAL utility bills (i.e. power, water) or one ORIGINAL utility bill and lease agreement or mortgage paperwork. If you are registering a child for 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade, you will need to bring proof of residence (as specified above). If you do your bill-paying online, please print out the bill showing the utility service and your address. If you would like to make copies of these documents for us, it will speed the registration process but we will need to SEE the originals.

There are two sessions for Kindergarten. The first session is from 9:00 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. and the second session is from 10:35 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. with a recess between 10:15 and 10:35 a.m. Kindergarteners living in the Ladera area are placed in the 1st session due to the bus schedule; kindergarteners living in the Woodside area are placed in the 2nd session also due to the bus schedule. All other registrations and session request forms will be date and time stamped for placement.

If your child is a returning first or second grader and you wish to request a change of session, email requests will be accepted beginning January 1, 2013. Please email the Principal, ssartor@llesd.org. If you are registering a new first or second grader, session request forms are included in the registration packet.

Tours of the school for parents of incoming new Kindergarten students and new first through third grade students will be offered on the following dates. These tours are for adults only and spaces available are limited to 10 per tour and 1 tour per family, so there are minimal distractions to the academic program. Please call the school office at 650-854-5900 to reserve a tour.

Session Change Requests for Next Year
Session Change Requests for 2013-2014

If you have a current kindergarten or first grade student and wish to move to first session next year, you must put that request in writing to Mrs. Sartor. She will begin taking requests by letter or email starting January 1, 2013. You may email her at ssartor@llesd.org. No requests will be honored prior to January 1st.

Do not wait until kindergarten registration in late January to make this request!  New family session requests are not accepted until January 28th, allowing our returning families to have priority on the wait list.   If you are on this year's wait list, you must make a new request for next year. We do not "roll over" the list from year to year. Please call Mrs. Sartor if you have any questions about the session request process.

PTA News

A reminder to all Committee Chairs and Event Volunteers-
We are experiencing a high number of requests for email communications to parents this year. Excessive use of email is not only a burden on Head Room Parents who must forward these messages on to parents, but also results in inconsistent distribution (not all emails are forwarded in a consistent manner) and email fatigue for parents. Please use the Lion's Roar as your primary means of communicating with the Las Lomitas community. Email should be used as a last resort for important information that didn't make it into the Lion's Roar by the weekly deadline. As a reminder, the Lion's Roar deadline is Wednesday at noon for the following Monday's publication. Please plan ahead and help us reduce the number of emails. Thank you for your help!
