"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Greetings!

In this month's newsletter we're celebrating summer!

We've included a list of upcoming events you won't want to miss, a volunteer opportunity that will fill you with PRIDE (hint, hint), and tips on how to create "Mind Bottles" this summer.

Tim Nation, PLC's executive director, focuses on how summer learning opportunities for children and youth have declined in recent years. In "Grow Yourself", Lisa Jones shares some fantastic summer camp opportunities for youth and adults. Finally, we've included a list of our wonderful most recent donors who have stepped up to make peace possible!

VOLUNTEERING AT PLC
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Stephanie is up front leading the class.

Peace Learning Center would like to recognize Stephanie Shrock as volunteer of the month! Stephanie selected PLC as her cause for 36 days during her 108 Sun Salutation challenge. Her goal is to raise money for various organizations doing good work in the community while also raising money to complete her RYT500 in Yoga Therapy. (Click here to learn more about her 108 Sun Salutation challenge.)

In addition to raising $450 to support Peace Learning Center's programs, she also donated her time and passion for yoga, by leading yoga sessions in the classrooms at one of our most challenging schools.

Naeemah Jackson, PLC's director of family programs, coordinated Stephanie's yoga sessions at the school and said, "Stephanie was incredibly poised and calm even though she was blown away by the culture in the school, and said the experience was completely outside her 'comfort zone,' and a much needed horizon expansion experience."

Thank you Stephanie for everything you have done for our organization. We are very grateful to have you on our team!

Mind Bottles!

Summer break presents a wonderful opportunity to teach your children, and even yourself, some new mindful practices! Research shows that practicing mindfulness helps people of all ages better cope with the stress of everyday life.

This is a very simple mindfulness activity you can do with your child or entire group of children.  We often use this activity during our Peacebuilders Summer Camp program to help children discover how to find a peaceful place within themselves when dealing with conflicts.

Mind bottles are also very simple and fun to make!

TIM'S PEACE UPDATE
SUMMER "BREAK"

School is out for summer. Once those doors close, kids aren't welcomed back until August.
Exploring nature during Peacebuilders Camp!

Think about it - here in Indianapolis that is 221,664 youth, 19 years and under, who need adults to take care of them.

While summer break is shorter for most youth because of balanced calendars (school is out for two weeks in fall, winter and spring) it still averages around 9 weeks. Youth are in school at least 180 days a year by law - that leaves 185 "out of school" days.

While our city enjoys new school choices through new charter, magnet and private schools, I've witnessed a decline in youth enrichment programs that focus on out of school time.

 Growing
GROW YOURSELF

While summer camp opportunities might be declining for many children, there are still so many unique summer camps and other adventures at PLC and beyond that await exploration!

I remember going to summer camp and dreading it when I was a child.  Camp was the same thing every day.... arts and crafts, taking a hike, playing tag, eating a peanut butter or bologna sandwich and a banana for lunch,  and then "hanging out" with volunteers watching over us, or "babysitting," until the day ended.

Summer at the Peace Learning Center. Wow, how times have changed!  They make me wish I could have a "do over".  So much to do, so much to see, so much to learn!!
