Book Club reads The Wednesday Sisters
Monday, March 3rd at 6:30 p.m.

The book club will meet to discuss The Wednesday Sisters on Monday, March 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in the Reading Room. All are welcome! Copies of the book are available to pick up at the Information Desk throughout the month for anyone who would like to participate.

"For thirty-five years, Frankie, Linda, Kath, Brett, and Ally have met every Wednesday at the park near their homes in Palo Alto, California. Defined when they first meet by what their husbands do, the young homemakers and mothers are far removed from the Summer of Love that has enveloped most of the Bay Area in 1967. These "Wednesday Sisters" seem to have little in common: Frankie is a timid transplant from Chicago, brutally blunt Linda is a remarkable athlete, Kath is a Kentucky debutante, quiet Ally has a secret, and quirky, ultra-intelligent Brett wears little white gloves with her miniskirts. But they are bonded by a shared love of both literature-Fitzgerald, Eliot, Austen, du Maurier, Plath, and Dickens-and the Miss America Pageant, which they watch together every year.

As the years roll on and their children grow, the quintet forms a writers circle to express their hopes and dreams through poems, stories, and, eventually, books. Along the way, they experience history in the making: Vietnam, the race for the moon, and a women's movement that challenges everything they have ever thought about themselves, while at the same time supporting one another through changes in their personal lives brought on by infidelity, longing, illness, failure, and success.

Humorous and moving, The Wednesday Sisters is a literary feast for book lovers that earns a place among those popular works that honor the joyful, mysterious, unbreakable bonds between friends."

10th Annual Women's Handwork Show
Reception Thursday, March 6th at 6:30 p.m.

It's time again for our Annual Women's Handwork Show! In it's 10th year, the show is a great chance to see the talents of local women on display.  woman-painting-bowl.jpg

View art in a variety of mediums from women artists in the area - from oil and watercolors to hand-knit works, and everything in between.

Library Box Office:  Aliyah
Thursday, March 13th at 6:00 p.m.

"Alex, 27, lives in a working-class Paris neighborhood and sells drugs for a living, continuously paying off the debts of his brother Isaac (played by French auteur Cedric Kahn), who's becoming a real burden. When his cousin, who has just returned from completing his military service in Israel, tells him he's opening a restaurant in Tel Aviv, Alex thinks that joining him might be the life-changing opportunity he was waiting for. But in order to leave, Alex must quickly find enough money and accomplish his "aliyah" (the term for Jews emigrating to Israel) which involves, among other things, Hebrew lessons and connecting with his Jewish roots. He also has to leave behind his beloved city of Paris, his former lover Esther, his lifelong friend Mathias, and Jeanne, a woman whom he's just met but has the potential of becoming someone important in his life. Torn between making his aliyah, his drug selling, his complicated love life and a destructive brother, Alex will have to find his own way and make a final decision."

In French with English subtitles.
Running time: 90 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.
Boys of the Town - Irish & Celtic Music
Thursday, March 20th at 6:30 p.m.

JEL is pleased to welcome back perennial favorite Boys of the Town for a St. Patrick's Day celebration!

"After many years of individually exploring various musical genres, these three friends teamed up to share a common love: Celtic-based music.

With young Hunter Foote on fiddle, John Ebersold on guitar and vocals, and Tim Loftus on flute, whistle and bodhran, Boys of the Town delivers top-shelf entertainment - from high energy, toe-tapping jigs and reels to heartfelt ballads.

Their unique blend of traditional Irish tunes, original songs, and favorite covers is guaranteed to leave audiences of all ages with a skip in their steps and a song in their hearts."

MA Cultural Council This program is supported in part by a grant from the Southbridge Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
