Library Box Office:  Lucky
Thursday, February 13th at 6:00 p.m.

"How could a recently orphaned, 10-year old homeless South African boy ever be called Lucky? Over the grave of his dead mother, Lucky makes a promise to make something of himself. Leaving the security of his remote Zulu village for the big city with the hope of going to school, he arrives on the doorstep of an uncle who has no use for him. Lucky then falls in with Padma, an elderly Indian woman with an inherent fear of Africans, who takes him in as she would a stray dog. Together, unable to speak each other's language, they develop an unlikely bond. Through an odyssey marked by greed, violence, and, ultimately, belonging, Lucky shows how a child's spirit can bring out decency, humility and even love in adults struggling to survive in the new South Africa."

In Zulu, Hindi & English with English subtitles.
Running time: 100 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.

The event is open to all ages, and Ms. Wooldridge will be talking about her research into Celtic myths, travels through Scotland, and adventures in bringing a novel from idea to published book.

Although from Auburn, MA, Ms. Wooldridge is no stranger to Southbridge. She has taken part in several poetry readings and run writer and poetry workshops at the Jacob Edwards Library, as well as at the Sturbridge Coffee Roasters on Hamilton Street. She still participates in one of Southbridge's local writers groups that meets at Thai Orchid.
