Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?

Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks.

Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.

As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.

If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member!
Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps.

January's JEL Staff Picks

Looking for a good book? Here are some that JEL staff have recently enjoyed! Clicking on the title will take you right to

the library's catalog, where you can check to see if it's available, and put a hold on popular titles!

January's Artist: Kristin Molloy
Reception Thursday, January 2nd at 6:30 p.m.

Kristin Molloy is a Massachusetts native who is a medical device engineer and has a passion for photography.  With her love of the outdoors, nature has become the primary subject matter of her photos.  Many of the works displayed are scenes from New England.

"Objects found in nature contain so much beauty and an amazing combination of colors.  Photography is a way to capture the way I see nature, preserve the images and share them with others."

A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, January 2nd from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, thanks to the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library. We hope to see you there!

The Kelpie author T.J. Wooldridge
Friday, January 3rd at 3:00 p.m.

Local author T. J. Wooldridge will be speaking, reading, and signing her debut novel, The Kelpie on Friday, January 3 starting at 3PM. A story based in Scottish folktales but taking place in modern day times, The Kelpie tells the story of a child-eating faery horse and the eleven-year-old girl who stands up to it to save her friends and family. The event is open to all ages, and Ms. Wooldridge will be talking about her research into Celtic myths, travels through Scotland, and adventures in bringing a novel from idea to published book.

Although from Auburn, MA, Ms. Wooldridge is no stranger to Southbridge. She has taken part in several poetry readings and run writer and poetry workshops at the Jacob Edwards Library, as well as at the Sturbridge Coffee Roasters on Hamilton Street. She still participates in one of Southbridge's local writers groups that meets at Thai Orchid. Additionally, she just gave a talk to Girl Power, a program through the Trinity Catholic Academy that supports and empowers young women.

Book Club: The Paris Wife by Paula McLain
Monday, January 6th at 6:30 p.m.

The book club will meet to discuss The Paris Wife on Monday, January 6th at 6:30 p.m. in the Reading Room. All are welcome! Copies of the book are available to pick up at the Information Desk throughout the month for anyone who would like to participate.

"Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness-until she meets Ernest Hemingway and her life changes forever. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group-the fabled "Lost Generation"-that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.

Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill-prepared for the hard-drinking and fast-living life of Jazz Age Paris, which hardly values traditional notions of family and monogamy. Surrounded by beautiful women and competing egos, Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history, pouring all the richness and intensity of his life with Hadley and their circle of friends into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises. Hadley, meanwhile, strives to hold on to her sense of self as the demands of life with Ernest grow costly and her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Despite their extraordinary bond, they eventually find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage-a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they've fought so hard for.

A heartbreaking portrayal of love and torn loyalty, The Paris Wife is all the more poignant because we know that, in the end, Hemingway wrote that he would rather have died than fallen in love with anyone but Hadley."

Library Box Office:  La Sirga
Thursday, January 9th at 6:00 p.m.

"Alicia is helpless. War memories invade her mind like threatening thunder. Uprooted by the armed conflict, she tries to reshape her life in La Sirga, a dilapidated hostel on the shores of a great lake in the highlands of the Andes. There, on a swampy and murky beach, she will try to settle down until her fears and the threat of war resurface again."

In Spanish (Colombian) with English subtitles.
Running time: 88 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.
Tom Ingrassia & Jared Chrudimsky
Book Signing: One Door Closes
Thursday, January 30th at 6:30 p.m.

Please join us in welcoming Tom Ingrassia and Jared Chrudimsky, co-authors of One Door Closes: Overcoming Adversity by Following Your Dreams for a discussion and book signing. Light refreshments provided by the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library.

"One Door Closes captures the inspirational, highly emotional stories of 16 individuals from all walks of life who have triumphed over seemingly insurmountable obstacles to achieve their goals. Through first-person accounts, these courageous survivors describe their personal approaches for living their lives with vision, courage, determination and passion. They share the wisdom they learned along the way -- often the hard way -- wisdom readers can use on their own journeys. Many are sharing their stories publicly for the first time.

Also included are 10 holistic self-assessment tools readers can use to design their own, personal blueprint for success.

13 of the 16 people profiled are 'ordinary people who have achieved extraordinary things' despite the odds. Also profiled are Scherrie Payne of The Supremes, June Monteiro of The Toys, and Mary Wilson of The Supremes (for whom Tom worked for 5 years) -- who shares a special message of healing and hope that forms the Epilogue of the book.

We hope you enjoy reading One Door Closes as much as we enjoyed writing it. We are very proud of the amazing group of guides we assembled for you!"
