Library eBooks!

You can download FREE ebooks from the library!

Library ebooks are available to download for Nook, Kindle, Sony, iPad/iPhone, and other devices! Just visit the Digital Catalog to get started.

Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?

Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks.

Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.

As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.

If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member!
Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps.

The book club will meet to discuss The Obituary Writer on Monday, November 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the Reading Room. All are welcome! Copies of the book are available to pick up at the Information Desk throughout the month for anyone who would like to participate.

"A sophisticated and suspenseful novel about the poignant lives of two women living in different eras.

On the day John F. Kennedy is inaugurated, Claire, a young wife and mother obsessed with the glamour of Jackie, struggles over the decision of whether to stay in a loveless but secure marriage or to follow the man she loves and whose baby she may be carrying.

Decades earlier, in 1919, Vivien Lowe, an obituary writer, is searching for her lover who disappeared in the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. By telling the stories of the dead, Vivien not only helps others cope with their grief but also begins to understand the devastation of her own terrible loss.

The surprising connection between these two women will change Claire 's life in unexpected and extraordinary ways. Part literary mystery and part love story, The Obituary Writer examines expectations of marriage and love, the roles of wives and mothers, and the emotions of grief, regret, and hope."

November's Artist: Stanley Kaufman
Reception Thursday, November 7th at 6:30 p.m.

Please join us in welcoming our featured artist for November, Stanley Kaufman. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, November 7th - light refreshments provided by the Friends of the Library.

"It all started in 1933...

I grew up a country boy in the Catskill Mountains on New York, enjoying summers on my grandparent's chicken farm. I spent over 40 years as an artist in a career in advertising. After working as a Printing Coordinator and Advertising Production Manager I became Art Director for an advertising agency on Madison Avenue in New York. Then I progressed to Senior Art Director and Account Executive for 16 years at an ad agency in New Jersey. After moving to Massachusetts in 1987 I opened my own Advertising Design & Production Studio servicing accounts throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut for 15 years. I then semi-retired and went back to my Fine Art Photography creating images for galleries and one man shows throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. About 8 years ago I closed up my traditional photographic darkroom and made a dramatic change involving Oil, Watercolor and Pastel painting, showing my work in juried shows and local fine art galleries.

My credentials include graduating from Santa Monica California School of Photography and Los Angeles City College with a degree in Advertising and Graphic Design. I also served as an Army Signal Corp. Photography for a few years.

Personally...

Based on my training and experience, like any artist, I have my own way of seeing and interpreting my subjects, and capturing the essence of a scene whether it be on film, with oil paints, watercolors or pastels. Spending my entire life as an artist, I thank my parents who were both artists. My mother was an oil painter and my father as a sign painter and graphic illustrator, gave me the talent I have been blessed with. The dynamics of composition, the essence and emotion contained within a subject is what I strive to capture in my art. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not!

Always striving to improve my work, and experimenting with a new medium is exciting and challenging. I think of it as a healthy endeavor. After all is said and done, that's all we are left with in the end."

Library Box Office: Clandestine Childhood
Thursday, November 14th at 6:00 p.m.

"Argentina, 1979. After years of exile, 12-year-old Juan and his family come back to Argentina under fake identities. Juan's parents and his uncle Beto are members of the Montoneros Organization, which is fighting against the Military Junta that rules the country. Because of their political activities they are being tracked down relentlessly, and the threat of capture and even death is constant. However, Juan's daily life is also full of warmth and humor, and he quickly and easily integrates into his new environment. His friends at school and the girl he has a gigantic crush on, Maria, know him as Ernesto, a name he must not forget, since his family's survival is at stake. Juan accepts this and follows all of his parents' rules until one day he is told that they need to move again immediately, and leave his friends and Maria behind without an explanation. This is a story about militancy, undercover life, and love. The story of a clandestine childhood."

In Spanish with English subtitles.
Running time: 110 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.
