Getting Ready for the 100th Anniversary!

Plans are well underway for the forthcoming centenary anniversary of the Jacob Edwards Library.

Starting in May 2014, the anniversary year will begin. It is a time to think about what the library has achieved and where we are headed for the future. Many programs are planned to bring the community together to celebrate. We hope you will join us.

A research team is working on the history of the library and a book will be published in 2014.

If you have any pictures or memorabilia of the library that you would like to share with us, please let us know!

The planning committe meets on the first Saturday of each month.

Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?

Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks.

Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.

As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.

If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member!
Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps.

"Six-year-old Emma vanished into the thick San Francisco fog. Or into the heaving Pacific. Or somewhere just beyond: to a parking lot, a stranger's van, or a road with traffic flashing by. Devastated by guilt, haunted by her fears about becoming a stepmother, Abby refuses to believe that Emma is dead. And so she searches for clues about what happened that morning-and cannot stop the flood of memories reaching from her own childhood to illuminate that irreversible moment on the beach.

Now, as the days drag into weeks, as the police lose interest and fliers fade on telephone poles, Emma's father finds solace in religion and scientific probability-but Abby can only wander the beaches and city streets, attempting to recover the past and the little girl she lost. With her life at a crossroads, she will leave San Francisco for a country thousands of miles away. And there, by the side of another sea, on a journey that has led her to another man and into a strange subculture of wanderers and surfers, Abby will make the most astounding discovery of all-as the truth of Emma's disappearance unravels with stunning force."

Library Box Office: Corpo Celeste
Thursday, October 10th at 6:00 p.m.

"Having recently returned to her native Italy after living in Switzerland for 10 years, quiet but curious 13-year-old Marta is left to her own devices while her loving but worn-out mother toils away at an industrial bakery. Marta's only source of socialization is the local church, where she is told to attend preparatory classes for her confirmation. But the doctrines of Roman Catholicism offer little in terms of life lessons or consolation, and she quickly sees through the hypocrisy of the priest, who cares more about status than about his constituents. Eventually, Marta forges her very own way of the cross, which turns out to have much less to do with God than with her own climb towards adulthood."

In Italian with English subtitles.
Running time: 100 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.

Authors Tom Farmer & Marty Foley will be at JEL on Halloween, the 14th anniversary of the murder of Mabel Greineder. The authors will discuss their book and the case, followed by a Q&A session a book signing. Copies of the book will be available for sale.

"A Murder in Wellesley takes the reader far beyond the headlines and national news coverage spawned by "May" Greineder's killing and tells the untold story of the meticulous investigation led by Marty Foley, the lead State Police detective on the case, from the morning of the murder through Dirk Greineder's ultimate conviction. Exhaustive interviews with key figures in the case, including many who have not talked publicly until now, contribute to an unprecedented behind-the-scenes account of how investigators methodically built their case against Greineder and how the sides taken by Dirk and May's relatives aided the investigation but bitterly divided their families."

Tom Farmer is a former award-winning Boston newspaper reporter and editor. While a reporter at the Boston Herald, Farmer covered the entire Dirk Greineder murder case and was also

He currently works in Boston as a corporate communications professional.

Marty Foley spent more than 24 years with the Massachusetts State Police where he retired in 2007 with the prestigious rank of Detective Lieutenant. During his law enforcement career Foley worked as a uniformed trooper and longtime detective for the Massachusetts Attorney General and Norfolk County District Attorney Homicide Unit. On September 11, 2001, Foley's investigative expertise resulted in his transfer to the elite State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Section, where he later became the unit's commander. He now works in the public sector for a defense contractor.
