Library eBooks!
| |
You can download FREE ebooks from the library!
Library ebooks are available to download for Nook, Kindle, Sony, iPad/iPhone, and other devices! Just visit the Digital Catalog to get started.
Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?
Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks. Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.
As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.
If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member! Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps. | |

See our website for more information on the Summer Reading program for all ages.
We also have copies of books assigned for school summer reading for all ages - please ask at the desk, and a staff member will be happy to show you where they are located. As we get to the end of the summer copies may not be available in-house right away, but we can always request a copy from another library - so please ask us if you don't see what you're looking for!

Book Club: No One You Know by Michelle Richmond
Monday, August 5th at 6:30 p.m.
The book club will meet to discuss No One You Know on Monday, August 5th at 6:30 p.m. in the Reading Room. All are welcome! Copies of the book are available to pick up at the Information Desk throughout the month.
"All her life Ellie Enderlin had been known as Lila's sister. Until one day, without warning, the shape of their family changed forever. Twenty years ago, Lila, a top math student at Stanford, was murdered in a crime that was never solved. In the aftermath of her sister's death, Ellie entrusted her most intimate feelings to a man who turned the story into a bestselling true crime book-a book that both devastated her family and identified one of Lila's professors as the killer.
Decades later, two Americans meet in a remote village in Nicaragua. Ellie is now a professional coffee buyer, an inveterate traveler and incapable of trust. Peter is a ruined academic. And their meeting is not by chance. As rain beats down on the steaming rooftops of the village, Peter leaves Ellie with a gift-the notebook that Lila carried everywhere, a piece of evidence not found with her body. Stunned, Ellie will return home to San Francisco to explore the mysteries of Lila's notebook, filled with mathematical equations, and begin a search that has been waiting for her all these years. It will lead her to a hundred-year-old mathematical puzzle, to a lover no one knew Lila had, to the motives and fate of the man who profited from their family's anguish-and to the deepest secrets even sisters keep from each other. As she connects with people whose lives unknowingly swirled around her own, Ellie will confront a series of startling revelations-from the eloquent truths of numbers to confessions of love, pain and loss.
A novel about the stories and lies that strangers, lovers and families tell-and the secrets we keep even from ourselves-Michelle Richmond's new novel is a work of astonishing depth and beauty, at once heartbreaking, provocative, and impossible to put down."

Library Box Office: Off White Lies
Thursday, August 8th at 6:00 p.m.
"After years of living apart from her dad, Libby, an introverted yet sharp-witted teenager, is sent to live with him is Israel. Her arrival coincides with the outbreak of the second Lebanon war. Libby quickly discovers that her dad, Shaul, is an infantile eccentric, and that he is 'in-between apartments' (in other words, homeless). Shaul comes up with a creative plan to put a roof over their heads - they pose as refugees from the bombarded northern region of Israel, and are taken in by a well-off family in Jerusalem. Finally in a 'normal' household, Shaul and Libby begin to build their father-daughter relationship, but their false identities can't last forever, especially as Libby unleashes teenage fury at the lies permeating her life; those she must tell now, and those she's been fed since childhood."
In Hebrew & English with English subtitles.
Running time: 86 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.
About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you. |

Book Signing: Patrice Demers Kaneda
Monday, August 12th at 2:00 p.m.
Please join us for a discussion & book signing with Southbridge native Patrice Demers Kaneda! A Tale of Two Migrations is a novelization of the French Canadian experience in America, and sections of the book take place right here in Southbridge.
About the author: Pat Demers Kaneda was born in Southbridge, Massachusetts, one of the Little Canadas, and lived there until the age of thirteen. She had a career as a teacher and lecturer in Connecticut and Japan and turned to her love of writing when she moved to Chicago after retirement in the year 2000, where she has been a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the Northwestern School of Continuing Studies and a frequent contributor of short stories and poems to the OLLI Journal. She and her husband Kunihiro divide their time between Chicago, Connecticut and Miami Beach.
About the book: A French Canadian Odyssey...Between 1840 and 1930 millions of people passed through Ellis Island to New York from the countries of Europe, but what do we know of the descendants of the 10,000 original settlers of Nouvelle France, French Canada, who walked, came on horseback, or train and made their way to New England and to a new life during the same period?
In this adventurous tale, Pat Demers Kaneda finds her family, real and imagined, in 17th century France and brings them across the sea to North America where they face hardship and unimagined challenges and leaves them in New England in the 1950's to face a new decade. If you are one of the descendants of the Quebecois, this is your story. It is one more piece of the American mosaic.

Jarrett J. Krosoczka - Imagining Beyond Your Circumstances (for Grades 6+)
Thursday, August 22nd at 6:30 p.m.
Jarrett J. Krosoczka, author and illustrator of the Lunch Lady graphic novel series & children's picture books such as Ollie the Purple Elephant, will soon visit Southbridge! To see which of Jarrett's books are available here at JEL, follow this link to the catalog!
Jarrett recently gave a very successful TED Talk in which he detailed the difficulties of his childhood and how he used his imagination to escape the realities that surrounded him. There have been many requests for Jarrett to share this story with students and we are now offering this lecture for older students. Jarrett paints the funny and touching story of a little boy who pursued a simple passion: to draw and write stories. With the help of a supporting cast of family and teachers, our protagonist grew up to become the successful creator of beloved children's book characters, and a vocal advocate for arts education.

Jarrett J. Krosoczka has been passionate about storytelling through words and pictures since he was a kid. He began his professional career by illustrating educational readers for a national publisher while still an undergraduate at Rhode Island School of Design. Then, just six months after graduation, Jarrett received his first contract for a trade book that he authored. Knopf Books for Young Readers published
Good Night, Monkey Boy on June 12, 2001 and Jarrett hasn't stopped or slowed down since.
Jarrett is a two-time winner of the Children's Choice Book Award for the Third to Fourth Grade Book of the Year and is the author and illustrator of twenty books including the Lunch Lady graphic novels and the just released Platypus Police Squad middle-grade chapter book series. Jarrett's TED Talk on his journey from boy to artist has been viewed more than a half-million times. He is also the host of The Book Report with JJK on SiriusXM's Kids Place Live, a weekly segment celebrating books, authors and reading. His work was recently featured on the front page of The Boston Globe and on NPR's All Things Considered. It has also been recommended by national publications such as Newsweek, The New York Times and USA Today. His Punk Farm picture book and Lunch Lady series are both currently in development as feature films. Jarrett lives in Western Massachusetts with his wife, two daughters and their pug-Ralph Macchio.
