Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?

Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks.

Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.

As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.

If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member!
Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps.

May's Featured Artist & Art Reception
Dolores Kosciusko
Thursday, May 2nd at 6:30 p.m.

Dolores Kosciusko "Let me introduce myself and my work.  I have been painting for over 50 years. My work has been shown in many parts of New England and Hawaii. I recently had 3 private shows and have been accepted in many juried shows. I consider myself a watercolor artist.

From 1975 to 1990, I taught art privately to both adults and children in the Dudley, Webster and Oxford area, the Quinebaug Art Center in Southbridge and the Hitchcock Academy in the town of Brimfield. I also taught adult education for Bartlett High School, Webster MA.

My work has been accepted in many art shows in the area and while living in Hawaii my watercolors were displayed at the Volcano National Park Visitors Center, and many local shows.

After a few years of inactivity to raise a family (although always finding some time to paint) I am once again starting to show my work. I love to paint local scenery, barns and older historical homes, and the sea shores of New England. Many of the barns that I have painted are no longer in existences. Although I prefer and mainly paint in watercolor, I also paint with acrylics on canvas and love to work in colored pencil. I am an avid plein aire artist when the opportunity presents itself."

A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, May 2nd from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., and the show will be on display throughout the month. Light refreshments will be served at the reception, thanks to the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library.

We hope to see you there!

Book Club - Defending Jacob by William Landay
Monday, May 6th at 6:30 p.m.

Defending Jacob JEL is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly, and new participants are always welcome.

This month the group will discuss Defending Jacob by William Landay:

"Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney in his suburban Massachusetts county for more than twenty years. He is respected in his community, tenacious in the courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their New England town, Andy is blindsided by what happens next: His fourteen-year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student.

Every parental instinct Andy has rallies to protect his boy. Jacob insists that he is innocent, and Andy believes him. Andy must. He's his father. But as damning facts and shocking revelations surface, as a marriage threatens to crumble and the trial intensifies, as the crisis reveals how little a father knows about his son, Andy will face a trial of his own-between loyalty and justice, between truth and allegation, between a past he's tried to bury and a future he cannot conceive.

Award-winning author William Landay has written the consummate novel of an embattled family in crisis-a suspenseful, character-driven mystery that is also a spellbinding tale of guilt, betrayal, and the terrifying speed at which our lives can spin out of control."

Library staff will obtain copies of each title for participants, available one month before the discussion date. Please ask at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!
Library Box Office: The Day I Saw Your Heart
Thursday, May 9th at 6:00 p.m.

The Day I Saw Your Heart "Families are complicated... Especially when Eli, the father, who's about to be 60, is expecting a baby with his new wife. Upon hearing this news, his two grown daughters, Dom, who is trying to adopt, and Justine, who flits from one boyfriend to the next, are shocked. To get closer to Justine, whom he has never gotten along with, Eli has the bright idea of making friends with all of her exes...without her knowledge. But when Justine falls in love again and Eli is about to ruin everything, this family is on the verge of falling apart. Will they all be able to make peace before it's too late?"

In French with English subtitles. Running time: 9 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.
