Library eBooks!
| |
You can download FREE ebooks from the library!
Library ebooks are available to download for Nook, Kindle, Sony, iPad/iPhone, and other devices! Just visit the Digital Catalog to get started.
Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?
Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks. Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.
As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.
If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member! Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps. | |

Book Club - The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman
Monday, April 1st at 6:30 p.m.
JEL is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly, and new participants are always welcome.
"After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day's journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby's cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.
Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Tom's judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.
M. L. Stedman's mesmerizing, beautifully written novel seduces us into accommodating Isabel's decision to keep this "gift from God." And we are swept into a story about extraordinarily compelling characters seeking to find their North Star in a world where there is no right answer, where justice for one person is another's tragic loss."
Library staff will obtain copies of each title for participants, available one month before the discussion date. Please ask at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!

April's Featured Artist & Art Reception
Jennifer D'Andrea
Thursday, April 4th at 6:30 p.m.
"With all of my work, because most of it is abstract, I want the viewer to feel rather than think about what they are seeing before the mind can try to make logical sense of it. Most of my images are channeled, unplanned and make impressions that stay with you like a dream, to be felt in the depths at the subconscious level. Because I want you to dream with me."
Please join us in welcoming local artist Jennifer "JenniFire" D'Andrea, our featured artist for April!
A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, April 4th from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, thanks to the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library. We hope to see you there!

Library Box Office: Free Men
Thursday, April 11th at 6:00 p.m.
"In German-occupied Paris, a young unemployed Algerian named Younes (played by break-out star, Tahar Rahim) earns his living as a black marketeer. Arrested by the French police but given a chance to avoid jail, Younes agrees to spy on the Paris Mosque. The police suspect the Mosque authorities, including its rector Ben Ghabrit, of aiding Muslim Resistance agents and helping North African Jews by giving them false certificates. At the Mosque, Younes meets the Algerian singer Salim Halali, and is moved by Salim's beautiful voice and strong personality. When Younes discovers that Salim is Jewish, he stops collaborating with the police and gradually transforms from a politically ignorant immigrant into a fully-fledged freedom fighter."
In French with English subtitles. Running time: 99 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.
About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you. |
