Library eBooks!
| |
You can download FREE ebooks from the library!
Library ebooks are available to download for Nook, Kindle, Sony, iPad/iPhone, and other devices! Just visit the Digital Catalog to get started.
Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?
Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks. Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.
As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.
If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member! Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps. | |

Book Club - State of Wonder by Ann Patchett
Monday, March 4th at 6:30 p.m.
JEL is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly, and new participants are always welcome.
"In a narrative replete with poison arrows, devouring snakes, scientific miracles, and spiritual transformations, "State of Wonder" presents a world of stunning surprise and danger, rich in emotional resonance and moral complexity.
As Dr. Marina Singh embarks upon an uncertain odyssey into the insect-infested Amazon, she will be forced to surrender herself to the lush but forbidding world that awaits within the jungle. Charged with finding her former mentor Dr. Annick Swenson, a researcher who has disappeared while working on a valuable new drug, she will have to confront her own memories of tragedy and sacrifice as she journeys into the unforgiving heart of darkness. Stirring and luminous, "State of Wonder" is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss beneath the rain forest's jeweled canopy."
Library staff will obtain copies of each title for participants, available one month before the discussion date. Please ask at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!

9th Annual Women's Handwork Show Exhibit & Reception
with The Boys of the Town Celtic Music
Thursday, March 7th at 6:30 p.m.
It's time again for our Annual Women's Handwork Show! View art in a variety of mediums from women artists in the area - everything from oil and watercolors to hand-knit works, and everything in between.
The show will be on display throughout the month, and feel free to stop by for the reception and meet the artists. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of the Friends of the Library.
Alongside the reception, local Traditional Irish musicians The Boys of the Town will get us in the mood for St. Patrick's Day!
"After many years of individually exploring various musical genres, these three friends teamed up to share a common love: Celtic-based music.
With young Hunter Foote on fiddle, John Ebersold on guitar and vocals, and Tim Loftus on flute, whistle and bodhran, Boys of the Town delivers top-shelf entertainment - from high energy, toe-tapping jigs and reels to heartfelt ballads.
Their unique blend of traditional Irish tunes, original songs, and favorite covers is guaranteed to leave audiences of all ages with a skip in their steps and a song in their hearts."
The Boys of the Town program is sponsored by the Southbridge Cultural Council.

Thursday, March 14th at 6:00 p.m.
"Ten year old Gulistan and her brother Firat live in the heart of Turkish Kurdistan. Tragedy strikes when their parents are shot down by paramilitary gunmen before their very eyes. Traumatized and orphaned, Gulistan and Firat try to care for their infant sister, but their money soon runs out and they're forced onto the street. It is there that Gulistan meets the part-time escort Dilara. Accompanying her on a hotel call one day, Gulistan is shocked to discover Dilara's client is the murderer of her parents, and quickly devises a plan for revenge."
In Turkish & Kurdish with English subtitles. Running time: 101 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.
About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you. |
