Library eBooks!
| |
Did you unwrap an ereader or a tablet over the holidays? You can download FREE ebooks from the library!
Library ebooks are available to download for Nook, Kindle, Sony, iPad/iPhone, and other devices! Just visit the Digital Catalog to get started.
Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?
Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks. Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.
As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.
If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member! Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps. | |

Featured Exhibit: Cara Fleming
Reception Thursday, January 3rd, 6:30 p.m.
Cara Fleming is a flame work glass artist who lives and works in rural Central Mass. Using a variety of Moretti and silver glasses, Cara creates lampwork beads, marbles, discs and other glass universes to be worn, enjoyed, shared, and explored.
Cara began flameworking in 2009 and very quickly realized this was the voice she had been looking for. Cara is a school psychologist and enjoys the contrasts and escape of the private world of flamework. Most days she can be found in the studio with her daughter Rosie, who is her creative consultant and CFO.
Please join us for a reception on Thursday, January 3rd from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. to meet the artist and view her work! Light refreshments provided by the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library. The exhibit will be on view for the month of January in the Main Hall.

Book Club - The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey
Monday, January 7th at 6:30 p.m.
JEL is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly, and new participants are always welcome.
This month the group will branch out from the mystery genre to discuss The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey, a work of historical fiction based on Charlotte Brontė's Jane Eyre:
"When her widower father drowns at sea, Gemma Hardy is taken from her native Iceland to Scotland to live with her kind uncle and his family. But the death of her doting guardian leaves Gemma under the care of her resentful aunt, and it soon becomes clear that she is nothing more than an unwelcome guest at Yew House. When she receives a scholarship to a private school, ten-year-old Gemma believes she's found the perfect solution and eagerly sets out again to a new home. However, at Claypoole she finds herself treated as an unpaid servant.
To Gemma's delight, the school goes bankrupt, and she takes a job as an au pair on the Orkney Islands. The remote Blackbird Hall belongs to Mr. Sinclair, a London businessman; his eight-year-old niece is Gemma's charge. Even before their first meeting, Gemma is, like everyone on the island, intrigued by Mr. Sinclair. Rich (by Gemma's standards), single, flying in from London when he pleases, Hugh Sinclair fills the house with life. An unlikely couple, the two are drawn to each other, but Gemma's biggest trial is about to begin: a journey of passion and betrayal, redemption and discovery, that will lead her to a life of which she's never dreamed.
Set in Scotland and Iceland in the 1950s and '60s, The Flight of Gemma Hardy--a captivating homage to Charlotte Brontė's Jane Eyre--is a sweeping saga that resurrects the timeless themes of the original but is destined to become a classic all its own."
Library staff will obtain copies of each title for participants, available one month before the discussion date. Please ask at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!

Library Box Office: Illegal
Thursday, January 10th at 6:00 p.m.
"Tania is a former teacher from Russia, living illegally in Belgium with her 14-year-old son, Ivan. One day, they are stopped on the street for a routine check by the police; Tania is arrested and placed in an immigration detention center for women, while Ivan manages to escape. Threatened with imminent deportation and fearful for Ivan's fate, Tania embarks on a harrowing journey, determined to preserve her dignity and find her son."
Winner, Cannes Film Festival 2010 SACD Prize, Directors' Fortnight
In French and Russian with English subtitles. Running time: 95 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.
About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you. |
