Library eBooks!
| |
Library ebooks are available to download for Nook, Kindle, Sony, iPad/iPhone, and other devices! Just visit the Digital Catalog to get started.
Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?
Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks. Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers. Different publishers set limits in different ways. For example, MacMillan and Simon & Schuster have never allowed e-books to be distributed to libraries via OverDrive, and HarperCollins limits each eBook to 26 checkouts, then requires libraries to buy another copy.
As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.
If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member! Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps. | |

Mystery Book Club - Learning to Swim
Monday, December 3rd at 6:30 p.m.
JEL is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly, and new participants are always welcome.
"'If I'd blinked, I would have missed it. But I didn't, and I saw something fall from the rear deck of the opposite ferry: a small, wide-eyed human face, in one tiny frozen moment, as it plummeted toward the water.'
When she witnesses a small child tumbling from a ferry into Lake Champlain, Troy Chance dives in without thinking. Harrowing moments later, she bobs to the surface, pulling a terrified little boy with her. As the ferry disappears into the distance, she begins a bone-chilling swim nearly a mile to shore with a tiny passenger on her back. Surprisingly, he speaks only French. He'll acknowledge that his name is Paul; otherwise, he's resolutely mute.
Troy assumes that Paul's frantic parents will be in touch with the police or the press. But what follows is a shocking and deafening silence. And Troy, a freelance writer, finds herself as fiercely determined to protect Paul as she is to find out what happened to him. What she uncovers will take her into a world of wealth and privilege and heedless self-indulgence-a world in which the murder of a child is not unthinkable. She'll need skill and courage to survive and protect her charge and herself.
Sara J. Henry's powerful and compelling Learning to Swim will move and disturb readers right up to its shattering conclusion."
Library staff will obtain copies of each title for participants, available one month before the discussion date. Please ask at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!

Holiday Concert with Hunter & Michael
Thursday, December 6th at 6:30 p.m.
We are pleased to welcome back Hunter Foote & Michael Caprera for another Holiday Concert! Bring the whole family to hear Michael & Hunter play some Holiday favorites, as well as some pieces of their own.
Hunter Foote has been studying violin since the age of 5. Using his talent and passion for music, Hunter has shared this gift with hundreds of groups and organizations. Hunter has become a much sought after solo performer at weddings, funerals, private parties, restaurants, and town festivals but he still makes time for lots of volunteering and benefits. Hunter also plays with a trio, The Boys of the Town, performing traditional Irish music. Michael Caprera is a talented performer and an emerging composer who lives in our community. Although only 17 years old, Michael has performed in many venues, and has many accomplishments, including a CD of his own recordings.
Michael & Hunter have been regular performers here at JEL, both together and solo, and we are delighted to welcome them back! This program is sponsored by the Southbridge Cultural Council.

Library Box Office: Foreign Letters
Thursday, December 13th at 6:00 p.m.
"Ellie, a 12-year-old immigrant girl from Israel, is lonely and homesick. Life brightens when she meets Thuy, a Vietnamese refugee her age. Trust slowly builds as the two teach each other about life in America. As Ellie and Thuy become inseparable, they eventually hurt and betray each other. Ellie must give up her most prized possession in order to save their friendship. Based on the filmmaker's own experience, Foreign Letters is a story about prejudice, poverty, shame, and the power of friendship to heal us. The film features the music of iconic Israeli musician Chava Alberstein, who was the director's favorite musician when her family immigrated to the US in 1982."
In English, Hebrew and Vietnamese with English subtitles. Running time: 100 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.
About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you. |
