Dear friends & family,
On my first visit to Spain, these are some things I noticed:
The roads are crowded with taxis, buses, Fiat-sized cars and many more motorcycles. There are lots of small dogs in the city, and they are always smiling.
Outside the city, one passes fields of windmill and solar panels. The soil is red, like our own southern soil. But out of it grow miles of olive trees, avocado trees, artichokes, citrus and grapes, thanks to the Mediterranean climate.
A fair number of people still smoke cigarettes. Wine is available at a certain McDonald's in Madrid. In bull fights, the bull always loses.
In the evenings of the week before Easter, the streets are taken over by processions: Drumming and horn music in minor keys, life-sized statues of Christ & the Virgin Mary surrounded by flowers, gilt, incense and candles; penitants dressed in what looks like the costume of America's KKK -- the parades wind slowly up and down the streets till the wee hours.
Amazing architecture can lift the soul.

Here are my picks for this week. Films, lectures, food, music, dance, conversations. Enjoy. And thanks for reading the CATALYST Weekly Reader!

This is "it"-we're here, finally, at the crisis point in the current series of Uranus/Pluto squares, a fractious cycle that began in June of 2012 and continues through March 2015. This week, the fifth exact square forms the foundation of a Cardinal Grand Cross, a configuration that ups the ante on local as well as global intensity (as if that's possible) and brings "things"-in all those places of tumult and turmoil, personal as well as collective, to a head...(read more).
