Dear Friends & Family,

The April issue went to press this morning. Look for it starting in the next few days!

It contains our annual Planting Guide, a handy pullout you can put on your fridge to remind you what needs planting when.

You'll find interviews with a choreographer, a composer, a cheese-making couple and a student activist; part 2 in the Chakra Series; how to tell if you need new running shoes; updates on new restaurants and other businesses of interest to the CAT reader; a recap of the State Legislature's environmental votes; book reviews; and lots more. This is an especially plump, info-packed issue.

Below are this week's picks.

Our two interns, Lacey Kniep and Jayne Ann Boud, are both getting married in May. We've assigned them the task of compiling advice for young marrieds from people "in the know."

If you're happily married, or wise by hindsight, and willing share something you wish you'd known (or are glad you found out) early on, please write to them.

From a sentence to a few paragraphs, we want your input. If you like, include your "credentials" ~ married (how long) or divorced. Names optional but encouraged. You're also welcome to include a photo. Send to: [email protected] ~ by Monday, April 8.

We will publish a compilation of your comments in the May 2013 CATALYST.
Governor Herbert endorses Fossil Fuel Earth Day Poster Contest but refuses to endorse Utah Moms for Clean Air's "Love your Mother" Earth day Poster Contest

If you haven't heard by now, the State Division of Oil, Gas and Mining's Earth Day poster contest (endorsed by Gov. Herbert) has cause somewhat of a controversy. Not surprisingly, environmental advocates (and people who want to breathe non-toxic air) have taken umbrage with the theme of the contest: "Where Would WE Be Without Oil, Gas, & Mining?"

Conversely, Governor Herbert refused to endorse Utah Moms for Clean Air's "Love Your Mother"-themed poster contest.

As is the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining's contest, the Utah Moms for Clean Air contest will be open to all K-6th grade and Special Education students throughout Utah. The deadline for the Utah Moms for Clean Air contest is later that the DOGM's deadline since that contest was just announced last Friday, March 22nd.

The deadline for "Love your Mother" submissions is:

April 17, 2013: School contests should be completed by this date and the school should have selected one winner for each grade level.

April 19, 2013: Schools must email PDFs of their winning entries with a electronic postmark date of April 19th, as well as, send the original artwork by mail also with a postmark date of April 19th, 2013.

Winners will be announced on Earth Day (April 22nd) and cash prizes will be awarded to the Grand Prize Winner ($300) and State-wide Grade Winners ($100, one per grade).

Winners, their parent and teachers will be honored at a Real Earth Day picnic on Saturday May 4th, hosted by Utah Moms for Clean Air. The Grand Prize winner will be announced at the award's picnic.

In an effort to match the $500 per grade award money being offered by the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining, Utah Moms for Clean Air is currently raising prize money. The actual cash award amounts will be officially determined by April 10th, but will be at least $100 per grade.

More information about the contest is available on the Utah Moms for Clean Air website: utahmomsforcleanair.org
Blog Updates

With spring blossoming in Utah, the birds, like the rest of nature, are busy with the business of procreation. For our backyard flock, that means the ganders crush our lone goose with their insatiable instinctual affection and the drake mounts his hens. In one respect, that was somewhat problematic for us. As I mentioned in a previous blog, we recently learned that the Protester carried dirty genes...(read more).

I always like to compare the fiery, tempestuous, dynamic energy of Aries to the excitable, impetuous, dramatic personality of Captain James T. Kirk, Starship Enterprise, who only set his course on adventure, boldly going where none had gone before, and upon arrival, suddenly realizing he had taken far too big a leap into the unknown and desperately needed support from his more circumspect cohort of Spock, Bones, and Scottie...(read more).

Free tickets to RDT's "Women of Valor: In the Spirit of Service"

Women of Valor...In the Spirit of Service commemorates the 150th Anniversary of Fort Douglas and pays tribute to women of have served selflessly in the community and in the military. Choreography includes "Commonplace" by Susan Hadley, "When Summoned" by Bill Evans, and "Bolero" by Joanie Smith of Shapiro & Smith Dance.

Dramatic monologues will pay tribute to the service, sacrifice, dedication, duty, and the strength of women. Three commissions inspired by the many diverse roles that women assume in society have been created by Susan Hadley, Abby Fiatand Lynne Wimmer. Stories of courageous female veterans, of women overcoming prejudice and breaking down stereotypes, and women who challenge the status quo performing tasks that have traditionally been a assigned to men are woven throughout the program. Noted actor, Ann Cullimore Decker shares the emotions of a Gold Star Mother speaking of her loss.
The military and contemporary modern dance; dramatic monologues and abstract movement -- unusual pairings. There is nothing ordinary about this concert of modern dance just as there is nothing ordinary about the selfless and brave women who will be honored.
